Mary (Coffin). Johnson to Jesse M. Hiatt, 1905 - "…and never was in Henry Co., Indiana, till I went purposely in 1893 from the Chicago World's Fair to visit my Uncle John Hiatt, the only one of my Mother's family then living, to find from him what I could learn of these early lost Hiatts. Uncle John was then past ninety has a clear memory and was very interesting. He too knew George and William (and John -- I am not sure about). of the old generation -- but he could not tell me anything of their father. Their father never lived in North Carolina. George, he said, could speak some other language then English -- he could not recall what it was." (R44).Found in Harmon Hiatt Records, 1895.
John was a farmer, he moved near Dublin, Indiana, where a number of Quaker families set up a church called "Bethel", near my father, Amer Hiatt's farm, for I went to drop corn for him when I was about five years old. He moved to
Henry Co., where the Quakers had established a flourishing society or meeting called Spiceland, where there were ten children were born to them. They were so careful of the health of the family that they had never required the services of a doctor till they were all grown. He attended to farming systematically and intelligently, and was able to give each child a house, which through their training, they were able to manage properly. He never aspired to any office, but was bright example of original Quakerism. His wife survivied him.

Joel Hiatt like his father and brother Mordecai, worked at the saddle and harness trade. I heard Mordecai say that Joel could always sell more goods than he could because he always covered up all defects and kept the saddle so
that it could not be seen. His motto was to sell, the purchaser being his own judge of the quality. He was an exception to the Hiatt name, for he was decidedly pro slavery, and went to Kansas at the time of the border ruffian troubles to own and have slaves there to help make the state a slave state. He became a great trader in hogs and cattle, driving them to Cincinnati from Milton, Indiana, before he moved to Kansas. In Kansas at Leavenworth he dealt largely in hogs and cattle.
