Notes

Alpha BALDWIN

Alpha and Reona , drove a 1918 Touring Sedan to Minnesota in 1924, taking all their possessions with them. Their good friends, a Worthman family also drove up there to relocate. Alpha had to help the Worthman's with gas money, as they kept saying they didn't have money. After they got to Minnesota, Alpha's  were penniless and had to live for awhile with a helpful woman before they could survive on their own. But the Worthman's didn't like Minnesota and returned home to Indiana. The Baldwin's didn't like Minnesota either but could not afford the trip back to Indiana. The family laughingly tells the tale today but it was a sore spot to the old folks for some time.  The children grew up at Carp, Minnesota. Alpha and Reona moved to Swift, Minnesota in 1945. A tree fell on Reona, while she was helping clear their land for homesteading, it broke her hip and she never got medical treatment, leaving her a cripple for life.  Alpha worked in an alfalfa meal plant at Swift for many years, up until he died at age 69. Reona lived for 6 years at her home then 3 years in a house of her own at Mardela's. Then she was in a nursing home at Kelliher, Minnesota for three years before her death. Alpha's grandson, Bruce has restored the 1928 Ford Sport Coupe Special, which had set in a heap on Alpha's farm.
