John Collyn Delna SAIDLA

From A Biographical History of Porter County 1976.
   John Collyn Saidla was born in Darlington, Ind, July 28, 1901 to Byrd
Saidla and Leota Hiatt Saidla.  He married Mildred L. Easley, July 12, 1922.
She was born in New Market, Ind to Charles W. Easley and Nancy Evelyn Buser
Easley  April 1905.
   They went to La Porte Ind, two weeks after their wedding.  There their
three children were born, Collyn Jr in 1923, Ila Joan in 1928 and Charles
Byrdell in 1932.
   John and Mildred started their machine shop about 1935 in LaPorte but it
soon outgrew its building, so in Jul 1939 they bought the old China Factory
building in Chesterton.  For 18 years the $140,000 China Factory stood idle
fefore it was purchased by them.  The main floor of the principal building was
converted to their machine shop (Atlas Manufacturing Co.)  Tehy employed 30
person.  Mildred worked along with john as a screw machine operator and
delivery man.
   The plant specialized in the manufacture of intricate metal parts that
required the work of highly skilled machinests.  Every other day they shipped
6,000 small metal pins to a Detroit auto plant for use in starters.  they also
produced an oil filter which was used on the engine of the Queen Mary.  They
also manufactured tripods and attachments for the manufacture of photopraphers
supplies.
  Always interested in the advancement of youth, they built a roller skating
rink (Atlas Roller Rink) on the upper floor.
  In 1942 they installed their own diesel electric plant and 24 hour a day
they engaged in defense work that turned out many screw products for
construction of battleships, submarines, tanks and airplanes.
  The front west end of the building was made into their 8 room apartment.
John and son Collyn Jr. were flying members of the Civil Air Patrol.  Jr.
crashed in their plane in a corn field in Liberty Township and was killed OCt
3, 1942.  That same month John and Mildred sold the factory and building and
moved their family to 130 Lincoln Ave.
   Their next rink, from 1943 to 1946 was in what is now the west side of the
Ben Franklin Store.  There John started his photography Studio.
   In 1946 they built their new Atlas Roller Rink at 880 Indiana Ave. with the
large studio and the 12 unit apartments along 9th st. finishing the apartments
in 1947.
    On Oct 18, 1947 Ila Joan know as Jo, married Dallas B. Summers known as
Jonny.  They had 2 childrren Collyn Burtus and Julie K.  Collyn B. married
JUstine Catherine Styonavich.  They have a son, Steven Michael Wayne, Julie
married E. Edward Esgate, they have a daughter, Sara Dawn.
   Charles B. went into the Air Force in 1949.  While stationed in California
he married Bernardine Sieple, they had 3 children, Judy Ann, 1953, Donald Jay
1955, and Sharon Marie 1956.  Charles divorced Bernardine and later remarried.
He now lives in Los Angeles, Calif. with his wife Rita D. Flandora and son John
Charles, 1966.
  In the years between 1946 and 1964 John and Mildred operated their studio
and rink.  They sold and serviced Hillicrafter TV's and appliances.  The studio
also housed John's ham radio station W(NHA.  He had belonged to the radio clubs
in LaPorte, Chesterton and Val Paraiso.
  In 1959 John attended the John herron Art School, Indianapolis, Ind. He
became a noted ceramist and had a large hobby and craft shop in with the
photographic studio where he taught many people who came from all over the
United States and Canada.  He held many different kinds of art and crafts
classes for local youth and surrounding cities.  John belonged to the Knights
of Pythias Lodge in La Porte, later moved his membership to the Chesterton
Lodge.
   In 1956 John and Mildred moved into the No.1 apartment as the house on
Lincoln Ave. was just too large for just the two of them.  About 1944 they
bought a cottage in Monticello, Ind. Mildred still owns it.
  On Sept 11, 1964 John died of cancer.  In 1965 Mildred sold the apartments.
The studio had been sold at John's death.  Mildred still lives in apartment No
1, 127 So. 9th St. Chesterton, Ind.
   Mildred had a heart attack in mar 1977 and in Oct of that year moved in
with Jonny and Jo.  In 1979 Jo became ill and the Dr. said that Mildred had to
go into a nursing home.  She was at Vail View for 3 months then went to
Whistering Pines in ValParaiso, Ind.  She is still there at this time.


Mildred Lenora EASLEY

  Mildred L. Saidla, 82, of Chesteron, In., died Wednesday in Wispering Pines
Nursing Home at Valparaiso, IN.  She had been ill for several years.
  Mrs. Saidla and her husband owned and operated Atlas Manufacturing at
LaPorte, In.  They moved to buisness to Chesteron in 1938.  The Saidla's also
owned andoperated Atlas roller skating rinks, the last of which was built in
1946.  They also built Saidla's apartments at Chesterton and Mrs. Saidla
operated the apartments unil 1973.
  She was born April 5, 1905, at New Market to Charles and Eva Buser Easley.
She married John C. Saidla on Jul 12, 1922.  He died in 1964.
  Survivors include a son Charles B. of Glendale, Calif., a daughter, Ila Joan
Summers of Chesterton, a sister Velma Tague of Crawfordville, six
grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, two nieces of Crawfordville, Mariam
Surface and Evelyn Carlile, and another niece of Las Vegas, and many cousins
in this area.  In addition ot her husband, her son, Collyn; two brothers, J.L.
and J.C. and sisters, Mrs. Paul Everson and Mrs. Earl Cowdin, are deceased.
  Funeral services are scheduled for 7:30 pm Friday in White Funeral Home with
the Rev. Mitchell officiating.  Friends may call at the funerla home 4-9 pm
Friday.  Graveside services are scheduled for 1 pm Saturday at IOOF Cemetery at
Darlington with the Rev. Mike Goforth officiating.

    Sent by Donald Brundage.  Died at home of son Amos Hiatt.  D/o Stephen
Glandon and Mary Vidtatson. (Vidtats or Viditos from Mayme and Annis Bales).
Migrated to Ind. in 1832 as a widow.
   "In 1833 the widow (Rachel Glandon), with her family, came to Indiana and settled on a farm in Randolph Co., where she also passed away at the home of her eldest son, in the year 1844.    Mrs. Hiatt was pious and gentle of disposition, and no children than hers ever had a more devoted mother."

Jesse HIATT

    Found in Ohio Marriages.  Married by Robert Safford, in Washington County, Iowa.  See notes of Moon Family under Sabina Moon.
    The family had come to Ohio from Ohio by 1800.  They moved to Ind. about
1835 and are found in the 1860 Census of Ind. in the town of Westfield.  Jesse was found with his son Nathan int he 1860 census.

Found in HH book, Volume I by William Perry Johnson.  Taken from Genealogy of the Hiatt Family According to Harmon Hiatt, 1895.  A daughter of Christopher's married Irwin Montgomery adn they lived in Virginia.

ERWIN MONTGOMERY MARRIED SARAH HIATT BEFORE THEY CAME TO CARROLL COUNTY IN 1805. ERWIN PURCHASED 150 ACRESOF LAND ADJOINING FAMILIES BELL AND HIATT IN 1805; PURCHASED THE WILLIAM DALTON FARM IN 1811; AND SOMETIME LATER AN ADDITIONAL 45 ACRES FROM ZACHARIAH STANLEY AND 41 ACRES BY GRANT.

ERWIN MONTGOMERY WAS ACTIVE IN CARROLL COLUNTY AFFAIRS AS APPRAISER OR COMMISSIONER SEVERAL TIMES. IN 1810 HE WAS RECOMMENDED TO THE GOVERNOR AS  ONE OF A GROUP QUALIFIED TO SERVE ON THE COUNTY COURT BUT WAS NOT APPOINTED.
