Hi Larry,
howcarbob@att.net3 May 2011
Kesha Miller had written you about the "Largest Collection of Hiatt Info for Everyone." She said that she was a descendant of Mary H Hiatt, daughter of David I Hiatt, son of Isom Hiatt and Mary Irwin (Erwin), etc. back to John Hiatt of Worcestershire England. She was interested in the Hiatt newsletter. Her message was number 1018 on the Genforum site.Your answer was that she was of the George lines. You stated that you dead end on this line after the 7 children of Mary and Richard Clem. (daughter of David I Hiatt)
My gg- grandmother's maiden name was Gray. She married Robert H Carpenter In Fountain county Indiana in 1839. He died in 1847. Then she married Jacob Herring on the January 1, 1852. They moved to Vermilion County Illinois & he died 11/03/1883. Then she married David I Hiatt on March 1, 1885. Her father was Joseph Gray & mother was Sarah Gustin. Margaret was born in Adams county Ohio. David was born in North Carolina and it was his third marriage.
I have found Robert Carpenters grave but so far have been unable to locate hers. My ancestor was Robert Carpenter. George L Hiatt was a son of David I. He was born in Indiana and married to Laura M Martin. I believe she was a niece of Margaret ( not proven yet).George & Laura moved to Kansas around 1887.
I hope this helps. Thank you for answering so quickly.
Bob HowardHi Larry,
I do not know the first wife's maiden name. I have seen it listed as only Margaret with the birth date of 1812. I assume his second wife was Nancy Ann Williams. Her birth date was also shown as 1812. Everything I know about the Hiatts came from the internet and I am sure much of it is not correct. Many people just copy someone elses work. I know that David I lived in Warren & Vermillion counties in Indiana. This I have from census records. He had two children buried in the Upper Mound Cemetery in Warren County Indiana. This was Linzy L Hiatt born 1838 & died Oct 15, 1855 & Clarinda Hiatt born 1840 & died Aug 12, 1858. There is a difference in childrens names from the 1850 census & the 1860 census. In the 1870 census he was in Vermilion County Illinois. Some of the time he was shown as David I & sometime as David J. But I think that was because of the writting. Ann Hiatt died between 1870 & 1880. I have not found her burial place.
My gg grandmother was his third wife. Margaret Gray, Carpenter, Herring, Hiatt. Their marriage record claims that it is the third marriage for both of them. Margaret Gray's father was Joseph C Gray & her mother was Sarah Gustin. Sarah's parents were Amos J Gustin & her mother was Catherine Rogers. This is per their mariage record from Vermilion County Illinois. My great grandfather was William Shelby Carpenter, his sisters were Nancy & Susan Carpenter. The two girls died before their mother. Their were two boys that had died around 1850. After her marriage to Jacob Herring they had a boy, Samuel Herring. All her children lived in Vermilion County Illinois. There is quite a bit written about Amos J Gustin as he was a Revolutionary War Veteran. He had about 13 children & lived in Adams County Ohio. The Gustins may have been Quakers.
David I Hiatt was 75 years old & Margaret was 69 years old when they married in 1885. This is the only connection I have to the Hiatts. I just would like to find there death dates & burial place. So that is my question to you.

Hi Larry,
We were in Danville Illinois last Saturday for a memorial service & after it was over went to the library to look for an obituary. I tried looking at the miro film but gave up after three weeks or so after the date we think she died. The Librarian told me that if the Pape web site did not have the obituary it was likely not to be in the newspapers there. Some lady had a death date of 1890. She claimed that it was written on a piece of paper in her husband's grandfathers Bible. That was all she had on Margaret Carpenter. This grandfather was from a second marriage of Margaret's son in law.
The Vermilion County court house has no death record for either of them.
David & Margaret sold or at least transfered some land to Margaret's daughter in law in Oct 1887. George L Hiatt was in Kansas by 1888 when twins were born to them. David had lived with them at least until He & Margaret were married. George L Hiatt was in the Civil War & kept a diary which his daughter in law gave to the Mississippi Museum. If you google his name you can see who has it. I don't know how one can see it. It probably would be very interesting.
If you want to send the dvd my address is1578 Olive Branch Lane
