Larry Anderson - Families and Individuals

Notes

Edmund PICKENS

CONFLICT: In Day's book, an article written by B. C. Clarke states that Edmund
PICKENS is a son or grandson of the 'renegade William' PICKENS, an individual
who lived in the Abbeville Dist. but apparently had Tory sympathies during the
Revolution. Mr. Clarke states that William fled to the Chickasaw lands in
northern Mississippi and southwestern Tennessee, where he married a Chickasaw
woman and raised a family.
There is a note at the end of the article, presumed to be editorial, that 'Dr.
A. L. Pickens in his book 'Skyagunsta' relates the story of one John Pickens, a
Tory, who went to Mississippi and married an Indian and reared a family. He
gives court records to prove his story."

I am browsing the WWW to find links to my ancestors. They lived, for the most
part, in current day Coal County, OK. My grandfather was half brother to Edmond
Pickens and both attended Wapanucka Academy.

Curious to know just who that half brother was. Would it be James McLaughlin,
thru Benjamin McLaughlin, thru Lucy McLaughlin?

Sharp, PICKENS FAMILIES OF THE SOUTH:
 p. 107.  "... One child was born to Mary after the death of John PICKENS whom
she named Edmund PICKENS. After John PICKENS' death she married Bernard
MCLAUGHLIN ... they went up the [Natchez] Trace together and lived in the
present Pontotoc County, near the Chicasaw Towns. Here Mary ADAMS PICKENS
MCLAUGHLIN died and left Bernard a widower before 1830.
Here too her son Edmund PICKENS grew to manhood and identified himself with the
Chickasaw Nation. Edmund PICKENS was living near the Monroe Mission which the
Presbyterians of SC established, and to which David PICKENS came as farmer [in
1821 - see p. 105 - tmc].
There he met  his nephew Edmund. It is most reasonable to suppose that he also
made a trip down the Natchez Trace to visit his nephew James PICKENS who lived
not more than 15 miles off the Trace in Leake County. Tradition states that he
also went to Natchez and found his brother's grave..."

April 3, 1830 - Rev. Cyrus BYINGTON conversed with the following with
reference to their admission to the church, viz: Edmund PICKENS, Sally FRAZER,
Nuseka COLBERT, Disey COLBERT.
April 30, 1831 - At Martyn [sp?] (a joint mission in Marshall Co., MS), Mrs.
Liney PICKENS, a native woman, presented herself for examination with a view to
uniting with the church. She was admitted.
May 1, 1831 - The ordination of baptism was administered to Mrs. PICKENS, her
husband being present, also to her children, Rachel, Mary, David.
Sep 11, 1831 - Baptised Silpha a colored woman, also the following children:
Johnson, son of Edmund and Liney PICKENS, William son of Nuseka and Mary
COLBERT, Phillip son of Chrisy and Martha, and Esther's daughter.
-----
Here we have evidence of the names of four children of Edmund and Liney PICKENS
- Rachel, Mary, David, Johnson...
Edmund PICKENS owned thousands of acres in Marshall Co., MS and Fayette Co.,
TN., which he sold for a large sum of money. He removed about 1846 to the west
and located near Ardmore OK. He was later a representative in Washington DC of
the Chickasaw Nation. As late as 1908 more than 52 members of the PICKENS family
in Oklahoma registered on the Final Rolls of the Rive Civilized Tribes. Twenty
people by PICKENS names on the Choctaw Roll and 32 on the Chickasaw Roll.
Upon inquiry the Oklahoma Historical Society informs that:
"Many of the old Chickasaw and Choctaw records kept by their respective
governments from the early 1870 to the early 1800's are on file in that
department in Oklahoma City. In the Chickasaw file is a large bound volume No.
53 of Old Pickens County, Chickasaw Nation, which contains much information of
the four counties in the Chickasaw Nation.
To get any information about these people, other than age, sex and degree of
blood, one would have to go to the Indian Office at Muskogee, to see the Census
Cards, which give something of the ancestry, or how they derived their degree of
blood."
Given names of PICKENS who registered in 1908 show:
Aaron, Clayborn, Eliza, Gincy, Hylan, Jefferson, Hattie, Hunter, Johnie, Mira,
Tommie, Annie, Nora, William, Apsie, Eli, George W., Hiram, Lizzie, Thompson,
Edmon, Edmond, Eunice, Frances, Henrietta, Isaiah, Joseph, Jane, Leona, Sampson,
Ziley, Austin, Edna, Isom, Louisa, Coleman, Malinda, Nelson, DeWitt, Gilbert,
Johnson, Melvina."
