Subject: Re: Pickens Family/1850/Lawrence County, AL To: Terry McLean

Hi Terry... I have been busy comparing the 1850 Lawrence County, AL Census to
your information and I wanted to share my thoughts with you. The two households
below were listed in this order in the 1850 census. The ( ) contain additional
names to further clarify relationships. Other information or opinions regarding
certain individuals are indicated below by the asterisks.
.............
Pickens, John K.....27M..Ala. *(John Knox Pickens)
"       Susan......22F.. "    (Mary Susannah Clark)
"       William.....2M.. "    (William A. Pickens)
"       Sarah.......1F.. "  **(Sarah Anne Pickens)  Pickens,
Joseph.....50M..S.C.  (Joseph J. Pickens)
"       Mary.......60F..N.C.  (Mary Ann Cunningham)
"       Prian J....14F..Ala.
Oglesby, John.......17M.. "
..............
Key, John...........40M..Va.   (John F. Key)
"   Elizabeth......38F..Ten.  (Elizabeth Ann Pickens)
"   Joseph.........12M..Ala.
"   Mary...........10F.. "
"   Elizabeth.......9F.. " ***(Susanna Elizabeth Key) .................
"   Margaret........6F.. "    (Margaret Key Boley)
"   George..........2M.. "    (George Dabney Key)  Wilson, William.....21M.. "

..................
*JOHN KNOX PICKENS was in my opinion the son of William Reuben and Mary
Cunningham Pickens rather than William's brother as your information indicates.
Several things led me to this conclusion.  To begin with the large age
difference between the firstborn, William, and John Knox immediately raised a
red flag. Also, there was a passage in the Sharp book stating that William moved
to Lawrence County, Alabama in 1821 with his firstborn son, James, and that he
had an unnamed son born between 1820 and 1830.  According to the census
information, John K. Pickens was born about 1823 in Alabama.  This would further
support Sharp's account that William had moved to Alabama and had  another son.
Finally, Mary Pickens was living in the household of John K. Pickens in the 1850
census which led me to believe that she was much closer to John than just a
former sister-in-law.
.........................
**SARAH ANNE PICKENS was unfortunately not my great-great grandmother.  The
great information you sent made that clear immediately.
..........................
***SUSANNA ELIZABETH KEY married my great-great-great grandfather, John L.
Heflin.  Susanna was born in Alabama on December 13, 1840.  She married John
sometime after 1858 and was found in the 1860, 1870 and 1880 Oktibbeha County,
MS Censuses.  We believe that she died and was buried in Oktibbeha County, MS
some time before 1900.
Well, Terry, your information has helped me immensely. Unfortunately this
means that I could establish no family ties to the Pickens family.  You can also
see that my information on the Key family is sketchy at best.... Once again,
thanks for everything.... Karen Hines"

Vol 16, p. 78.  "Lawrence County [AL] Character Sketches - September 13, 1911,
"...Mr. PICKENS was married to Miss STEPHENSON, a daughter of the Hon. Hodge
L.  STEPHENSON, Feb. 12, 1840. Mrs. STEPENSON (PICKENS?) died March 25, 1867.. .
Their second son, Thomas M. PICKENS, was born Feb. 18, 1849 and married Annie
MOORE, Aug. 1874.  His second wife was Margarette Isabell SANDLIN, to whom he
was married Nov. 23, 1879... Thomas is still living on his father's old place
where his life has been spent. He is an industrious man, a devout Christian, a
good neighbor, a kind husband, a loving father, a good friend.
We do not suppose that he has an enemy in the world.  It is a pleasure to visit
his happy home and chat with him and his good wife, to see his loving children,
nearly all of whom are gone from under the paternal roof and are building a
happy home of their own..."

There are few larger familiels in Lawrence County, than those of Gibson
ROBERSON and his children.  His children own good homes and are making
excellent homes.  You cannot find a mor industrious set than they are.
They are pillars of the Presbyterian church.  If you visit Rock Springs on a
July 4h occasion and cannot count nearly 100 of Gibson ROBERSON's descendants,
somebody is sick or is a very rainy day.
If a school house is to be built, they don't let any set of people who don't
outnumber them do more than they.
The good old mother still lives and is a benediction to her children,
grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
 Recapitulation:
  Number of children             13
  Number of grandchildren        52
  Number of great-grandchildren  16
     Total number living         81
     Total number dead           24
         Grand total            105
In August 1910 they had a family reunion.  There were present ?? and 18 who
could not be present."
