Mary GILLESPE, wife of Robert BOWEN was dau of William GILLESPIE & his wife
Mary. The GILLESPIEs lived in Augusta Co., VA & Wm. made the move to Pendleton
with the BOWENs & Wm. GILLESPIE Jr. By 1800 Census old William was living in
household of Wm. Jr. "Old" William was probably son of James GILLESPIE & wife
Jennet - will dated 5 Sept 1768 - pro 20 Oct 1768. Children: John, James,
William, Agness & Elizabeth. (James Gillespie had a brother, John whose children
lived in Ireland). In the event of William's death bef his wife's death, then
William's children inherit his land.) James' will in Botetourt Co.

My GILLESPIE line goes through William (b.c.1720, d. c. 1801 in Pendleton Co.,
SC) who lived near present-day Clifton Forge, Va., where the Cowpasture River
and the Jackson River form the James River (present-day Botetourt Co.). Your
Mathew sounds like like a contemporary. I've long thought William came to
Virginia from PA but have never been able to prove it. Thomas, Robert & William
GILLESPIE all lived there in Botetourt Co. at the same time, but I've never been
able to find any proof of their relationship. I've assumed that they were
brothers, but I don't know.
William married Mary _____ (d.c. 1800). They had children:
[1] Robert (c. 1747-1801) married Agnes ____.
[2] Mary (c.1749-1822) married Robert BOWEN.
[3] James (c.1751-1834) married Isabella GILLESPIE.
[4] Agnes (c.1752-?) married Charles BOWEN.
[5] John (c.1753-1822) married Jane HARVEY.
[6] William (c.1761-?) married Susander ____.
[7] Elizabeth (c.1763-?) married James CUNNINGHAM.
I'm related through John & Jane (HARVEY) GILLESPIE.
For a long time I thought the Thomas GILLESPIE, who married Margaret "Peggy"
BOWEN, was their son, but I think now that his father was Thomas (mentioned
above). I don't know from where William came, but most researchers think he came
from the Lancaster Co., Pa., area after arriving from Ireland. He arrived in
Botetourt Co. about 1746-47. Sometime around 1790, William & Mary GILLESPIE
moved with several of their grown children and spouses to Pendleton Co., SC.
I've never seen any proof of it, but I think William & Mary both died there in
SC about 1799-1800. Some of the children then went to Hickman Co., TN, and some
remained in SC. My direct line came to western NC near present-day Rosman. The
next generation moved near present-day Hendersonville in western NC and have
remained there. This is also the line of GILLESPIE rifle makers.....
William & Mary GILLESPIE's daughter Mary married Robert BOWEN (son of John &
Lillie MCILHENNY BOWEN) in c. 1770. The daughter of Robert & Mary was Agnes
Bowen PICKENS, but I don't know the husband's name. Also, the area in SC to
which the GILLESPIEs moved in about 1790 was called the Pendleton District;
today it is Pickens Co. It's just west of present-day Greenville, SC. Maybe
there's a connection there.
In Virginia (c.1745-1790), related families were: HARVEY, BOWEN, CUNNINGHAM.
There was a Hugh GILLESPIE who lived near William & Mary on the Cowpasture
River who died in 1777. I've never heard much else about him. Ever hear of him?
Also, on 2 Nov 1797, William GILLESPIE (above) sold 354 acres to James GILLESPIE
of Wythe Co, Va., and Thomas GILLESPIE of Russell Co., Va. I am almost sure that
these are his two sons that did not go with him to Pendleton Co., SC...."
