 p. 332. "[Among] The original settlers of Augusta [Co. VA]...
Archibald HAMILTON, whose wife was Frances CALHOUN... [lived], in Beverley
Manor... had five sons - William, John, Andrew, Audley, Archibald - and a
daughter, Lettice. The third son, Maj. Andrew HAMILTON, was born in 1741. He
married, in Augusta, Jane MAGILL, a native of Pennsylvania, and in 1765 removed
to South Carolina and settled at Abbeville, in the neighborhood of Andrew
PICKENS, afterwards the celebrated General PICKENS, who had gone south with his
parents from Augusta several years previously. Both HAMILTON and PICKENS entered
the military service at the beginning of the Revolutionary War.
The former served throughout the waar, first as captain, then as major, under
General PICKENS, and took part in all the important battles in South Carolina
and Georgia. At one time he was imprisoned in a blockhouse on his own estate.
After the war Major HAMILTON was elected to the Legislature of South Carolina,
and continued as a member thereof until incapacitated for further service by old
age. Then he was requested to nominate his successor, who was immediately
elelcted. He died January 19, 1835 in the ninety-fifth year of his age, his wife
having died April 20, 1826 inher eighty-sixth year. They were both buried in the
Upper Long Cane Church, of which Major HAMILTON and General PICKENS are said to
have been the first elders. Major HAMILTON left many descendants, among whom are

IRISH BURKS OF COLONIAL VIRGINIA AND NEW RIVER, by Patricia Givens Johnson
(Patricia Givens Johnson, Walpa Publishing, 4201 Prices Fork Rd, Blacksburg
VA, 24060, 1992. Phone 703/951-2045):
 p. 32-33: "In January 1743 Robert and Mary [NAPIER] deed the slave "Murrea"
to son Patrick, witnessed by Robert HUGHES Sr, and Jr., and a slave to
daughter Frances, witness Philip Scudamore MONSON (Goochland D. Bk IV
340)...[this] Philip Scudamore MONSON...is Scudamore MUNCY-MUNCEE who later
appears on New River. The SCUDAMORES were Royalist nobility who came to New
England, thru New York to Maryland and into Virginia. On the way they
intermarried on the Delaware with MUNCEYs.
MUNCEY is a name given the Minsi Indian tribe who lived in the mountains
near Port Jervis where New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania join. They
intermingled with the Algonquins of the lower Delaware valley. (Francis
Jennings, THE AMBIGUOUS IRIQUOIS EMPIRE, p. 27 - New York: W. W. Norton, 1984).
It appears Scudamore MUNCEY is another person whose white ancestor Scudamore
intermarried into an Indian Tribe."
 p. 232:  Giles Defense - 1779.  ...The MUNCEYS had built Muncey's Fort near
Kimberling Creek on Walker's Creek. The Scudamores, Royalists from
Hertfordshire came to Connecticut, then by 1692 to Kent County, Delaware where
Abigail SCUDAMORE married Francis MUNCEY.  Their children came to Augusta
County and Scudamore MUNCEY married Mary SCOTT, daughter of Samuel and Ann
SCOTT. (Bales, Lee Co., 1125, 1169, 1170). They then came to Walker's Creek
where Scudamore of "Skidmore", Obediah and Holton MUNCEY enrolled in Captain
Henry PATTON's Company. (Frances Muncey told author, May 25, 1991)."
 p. 266: The MUNCEY Connection. In July 1742 the Muncey Indians, a Delaware
Tribe, were told to vacate their Pennsylvania land. So bands of Munceys-
Delawares are scattering trying to find new places one year before William
BURK appears on Shenandoah and about the same time Scudamore MONSON-MUNCEY
appears in Goochland County with the Robert HUGHES family (p. 33 this book).
These HUGHES appear to be Quakers. Some of the Munceys in Pennsylvania are
called "Quaker Indians" and in 1763 some moved to Philadelphia to escape
Pontiac's war.
Scudamore MUNCEY later in 1777 moves to Walker's Creek, New River near
Thomas BURK, William's son. Scudamore and a large extended family of MUNCEYs
arrive and built a fort on Walker's Creek in the area Capt. Thomas BURK is
trying to defend in 1777. Is there a connection between the BURKS and MUNCEYS
in Pennsylvania?"

!QUESTION: if Mary was an older sister of Jane, why was she not listed in
Samuel's declaration of importation? [It is unlikely he had a child old enough
to be married at that time... tmc]
