The Thomas PICKENS, or Green-Sitton House, was built in 1860. Dr. Thomas J.
PICKENS bought the land from John L. LORTON and the house was built by slaves
of Samuel MAXWELL for Miss Sue MAXWELL, who married Dr. PICKENS.
The future Mrs. PICKENS, however, preferred to live in a house given her by
her parents, and the PICKENS family never lived here.
The completed house was bought by Capt. James Faraquhar GREEN of Charleston,
who lived there many years...Map No. 20, located at 118 N. Elm Street."
THE GLEN. More commonly known today as the Dr. T. J. PICKENS house, the Glen
was built and first occupied by Dr. and Mrs. Arthur S. GIBBES. Dr. GIBBES
married Phoebe, adopted daughter of the James STUARTS, and the STUARTS let
them build on the Friendville property a short distance away.
When the STUARTs returned to Beaufort, selling Friendville, the GIBBES
returned with them and THE GLEN came into ownership of the Samuel MAXWELLs. He
gave the house as a wedding gift in 1859 to a daughter, Sue, who did not
particularly like the house her future husband, Dr. PICKENS, was building on
Elm Street....Map No. 29, located on Mi Casa Drive."
