Nannie PICKENS

Posted by Becky Geer on April 09, 1999:
"..Nannie Stricklin's father and mother were Avery and Betty Pickens. I
checked the 1850 census and it showed Avery being 1 year old. It showed his
parents to be William and Millie Pickens. But I am still searching for any
information on Betty Pickens and William (born 1804 in Georgia?) and Millie (do
not know maiden name, born around 1820 in TN) Any information would be
appreciated.

-----------------------------------

PICKENS FAMILIES OF THE SOUTH, E. M. Sharp:
 p. 85. Zachariah PICKENS - believed to be one of the two sons of Gabriel
PICKENS was in Hardin County in 1860 living at Hamburg on Tennessee River. He
was not there in 1850 or in 1870. He had the following family in 1860.
[here names 5 children: Polly, Susan, Elizabeth, Richard, Jennette].
There may have been older children married and living elsewhere. Zachariah was
certainly somewhere in Tennessee as early as 1833. We place him here because in
1820 Gabriel PICKENS had an unmarried son who was then above 26 years of age.
Listed between 26 and 45. There is no record in Hardin County that would
indicate any other for a son of Gabriel, who we know was living with him in 1820
in Hardin County..."
 p. 87. Martha (Patsey) PICKENS... never married. Her will is recorded in Will
Book "B," p. 52, signed by her 20 April 1870.  She named her "beloved sisters,
Hannah S. PICKENS, Margaret JONES, Elizabeth PHILLIPS, Izzy BIVENS, and Lydia
WELSH, and beloved brother William PICKENS and W. COVEY.
[this entry seems to indicate that Zachariah, if indeed a child of Gabriel, and
a brother to Martha, may be dead by 1870 - tmc].

PICKENS FAMILIES OF THE SOUTH, E. M. Sharp:
p. 88. Margaret PICKENS married a Mr. JONES. The only reason we can identify
her is that her sister, Patsey PICKENS, named her in her will of April 30,
1870, and left her some gift, naming her as "my beloved sister, Margaret JONES.
" A search of the census of Hardin County and of Tishomingo County,
Mississippi, has failed to locate her. It will be noted later that a son of
her brother, William PICKENS, married a Miss JONES in Tishomingo County,
Mississippi. She could have been a daughter of Margaret PICKENS JONES".
