Served in Union 17th Kentucky Infantry for 2yrs, 4mos. Discharged in 1864.
According to a letter from Val McAtee dated 4 May 2000: "Grandfather WF McAtee was a sergeant in the Union Army at the time of his discharge. He took a group of southern prisoners to NY state to a Union prison and while he was there took pneumonia and was sick for a long time. He developed dysentary while he was stationed there, and still suffered from it when he was discharged. It finally killed him. He was drawing a $20 a month pension."
