FIFTH GENERATION: GREAT-GRANDCHILDREN OF JOHN HIATT, JR.

(391.)    WILLIAM  HIATT (77.)  (11.)  (2.)  (1.):
b. 17-3mo-1786, Surry Co, NC.; d. 26 January 1858, Madison Co., Indiana; m.22 July 1806 (date of marriage bond, Grayson Co., Va.), to JEMIMA LUNDY, d/o Amos and Ann (Collins). Lundy; b. c1788/9, prob. Grayson Co., Va. (?).; d. 20 February 1882, Madison Co., Indiana. Prior to 1811 William Hiatt removed from Va. to near Chillicothe, Ross Co., Ohio; was in Highland Co., Ohio by 1820; resided for a time in Fayette Co., Ohio, before removing in 1835 to Henry Co., Indiana; settled 1852 in Madison Co., Indiana.

CH: (1113.)  Tamer; (1114.)  Ann; (1115.)  Amos; (1116.)  Mary; (1117.)  John; (1118.)  ----; (1119.) ---; (1120.)  Levi; (1121.)  William; (1122.)  ----; (1123.)  ----; (1124.)  ----; (1125.)  Jemima; (1126.)  Jacob; (1127.)  Eli; (1128.)  Elias; (1129.)  Elihu; (1130.)  ----; (1131.)  Rachel.

Mt. Pleasant Mo. Mtg., Grayson Co., Va.:
27-12mo-1806 - Jemima Hiett (formerly Lundy). disowned. (R45).

It is a tradition that Jemima Lundy was born at Lundy's Lane, where was fought, during the War of 1812, the Battle of Lundy's Lane. At Deep River Mo. Mtg., Guilford Co., NC., 3-1mo-1785, Amos Lundy and wife Ann and children Rachel, Ann, Ebenezer, Tamer, Nathan, James, Jemima and Susannah received on certificate from Kingwood Mo. Mtg., New Jersey, dated 9-9mo-1784. (R45). Either this Jemima is the one who married 1806 to William Hiatt, her date of birth thus being c1782, and the place New Jersey, or else this Jemima died young and a subsequent daughter was born c1788/9 after Amos Lundy had removed with his family to Grayson Co., Va., and also named Jemima. Many of the pioneers were very careless about keeping family records, and possibly Jemima was actually born c1782 in New Jersey, rather than 1788/9, according to her record on the 1850 and 1860 Census reports, and in Virginia. Since she would have been but two years old when the family removed from New Jersey to North Carolina and Virginia, she would have personal recollection of having lived only in Virginia. That she is a daughter of Amos and Ann (Collins). Lundy, there can be no doubt. It is not only possible, but probable, that there was but one Jemima in the family of Amos Lundy, and that the 6 or 7 year discrepancy in the age of Jemima came about as suggested.
Returning to the tradition that Jemima Lundy was born at Lundy's Lane, the land was owned by Jemima's uncle, William Lundy, and was on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls, in the Province of Ontario, near enough to the Falls so that the sound of the water could be heard from the farm. Jemima, however, was probably born in Warren Co., New Jersey.

Benjamin Lundy, the noted abolitionist of Civil War days, was a second cousin to Jemima (Lundy). Hiatt, their grandfathers being brothers. Jemima's brother, James Lundy, was great-grandfather of the late William Wade Hinshaw, of Washington, D. C., his mother being Anna Harriett Lundy, d/o Levi Lundy, and granddaughter of James. Mr. Hinshaw has published five volumes of Quaker records, The Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy, the sixth volume at this writing in the hands of the printer.

Ann (Willson). Lundy, Jemima's paternal grandmother, removed late in life to the Blue Ridge Mountains of Grayson (now Carroll). Co., Va., where she died age 102. William Hiatt died of a typhoid epidemic in 1858. He and Jemima are buried in Forrestville Cemetery, Madison Co., Indiana.

1850 Census, Stony Creek Twp., Henry Co., Indiana: William Hiatt, 64, NC.; Jemima, 61, Va.; Rachel, 17, Ohio; Mary Hiatt, 87, NC.; Elias, 21, Ohio.

1860 Census, Duck Creek Twp., Madison Co., Indiana: Robert Dickey, 29, Ind.; Rachel, 28, Ind.; Ambrose, 5, Ind,; Ann, 3, Ind.; Jemima Hyett, 72, Va,; Rachel Johnson, 9, Ind.

Daniel Lundy, Jemima's first cousin, was security on their marriage bond - William Hiatt to Jemima Lundy, 22 July 1806, Grayson Co., Va.

Jemima LUNDY

Sent by Connie Dabel.  Bette Millaway wrote and told us about a Lundy newsletter, sent out by Toni Rodgers in West Monroe, La., for members of the Lundy families.
D/o Amos and Ann Collins Lundy.
In the 1870 Census of Mahaska Co., Iowa, Jemima Hiatt is living in Oskaloosa, Mahaka Co., Ia. age 84, born in New Jersey.  She was living with her daughter Mary Crispin, age 57, Keeping House, born Ohio, dau. Minerva age 17, born Iowa.
Jemima Lundy Hiatt's Gravestone:  by Florence Hiatt, 17 Tenth St., Columbus, Ga.  31901  See also Newsletters, Vol. VII, No. 2  Aug. 1991 pg.5
Some people may not know that there is proof of age of Jemima Lundy Hiatt, who married William Hiatt.  Jemima Lundy Hiatt's tombstone is still at her grave in Indiana and the dates offer proof that she did die at the age of 100 years, sadly, the tombstone has been broken in two, possibly by vandals, but it is still there and legible.
Jemima Lundy b. 1772 d. 20 Feb. 1882, Madison Co., Ind.  Married William Hiatt 22 July 1806 in Grayson Co., Va.
I mention this because I have read in several books that the age may be incorrect and that the records may be in error, saying that she was really only 90, and adjusting her birth or death date to suit what they are printing.
This William and Jemima Lundy Hiatt had 19 children.  I know the names of 13 of them and would like to know any others.  I am a descendant of their son Levi Hiatt who married Ann Adamsom.

Enoch HIATT

Found on page 346 of HH book by William Perry Johnson.  Removed to Iowa.  His brother Amos was in Keokuk, IA by 1850 Census.

Susena, 3;  all born in Iowa.

CHILDREN? Who do they belong to, Amos or Enoch?
Joseph is not mentioned as child of Amos, nor is Joshua so probably belong to Enoch. Then the girls, not mentioned with either one at this time. Need further records, census, etc. to separate, or better yet, a member of the families that will have records.

James writes:  There is so much confusing information on this Hiatt family.

Some researchers say Elihu was born in Grayson Co., Vir and some say in Surry Co., or Guilford Co., North Carolina.  Some of his brothers and sisters were born in Guilford Co., and then after 1796 in Grayson County so no doubt the family moved from North Carolina to Virginia about that time. There is no doubt that Elihu moved to Highland Co., Ohio because all of his children were born there as stated by the Quaker records from which church he was disowned for disunity - marriage contrary to their beliefs - when he married his second wife, who was not a Quaker and who was our grandmother.
