William Sawyer, 83 year old life-long resident of La Porte City and
vicinity, passed away at his home on Pine St at 3 o'clock Wednesday
morning (April 27) after a brief illness due to heart disease. He had
been as well as usual and able to be out until Saturday night [April
23rd], when he was [first] stricken, His condition had improved but a
second attack, suffered Tuesday night (April 26) proved fatal. William
Sheridan Sawyer, son of Edmund and Matilda [Williams] Sawyer Jr, was born
on a farm in Spring Creek township, Black Hawk County, northeast of La
Porte City and lived there until moving to his home on Pine St in 1919. On
January 28, 1891, he was united in marriage to Eva (Smith] Longaker at La
Porte City and they established a home on a Spring Creek farm. Seven
children were born to them, Claude Sawyer of Dysart; Cleo Sawyer of
Pasadena, Calif; Merla and Ruth, deceased; Mrs Glenn Teeter [Margaret] of
La Porte City; and Mrs Vernon Ayers [Eva] and John Sawyer of Pasadena."

Following notice from old newspaper clipping: Mrs Eva Sawyer, wife of
William Sawyer of Spring Creek township, died at the family home on
Wednesday afternoon of this week. Mrs Sawyer was the daughter of John
Longaker [and Margret Smith] of Spring Creek township. She was born Feb
20, 1872 and was married to Will Sawyer Jan 28, 1891. She leaves a family
of six children, three boys and three girls, the youngest child being a
baby boy eleven days old when the mother died. The deceased had been
afflicted with a uterine tumor, and child-birth brought about
complications terminating in Septic fever from which she died. Mrs Sawyer
was a good wife and mother and a most estimable lady, having many friends
in the community in which she lived. She was a devoted Christian, being
one of the most active members of the River Brethren church. The
heartfelt sympathy of the community goes out to the bereaved husband and
to the family of the children who are left motherless. The funeral
services will be held Saturday forenoon at 11 o'clock at the Spring Creek
church.
