Frederick II the Great King of Prussia
THe King's lifestyle was austere and his preferred residence was Sans Souci, a
secluded mansion. Although married, he lived as a bachelor and ladies were
seldom seen at his court, which was the occasion of some scandal. He preferred
to speak and write in French. No issue, succeded by his nephew. Frederick was
extremely sympathetic to the American Revolution and was an admirer of George
Washington. He was one of the first sovereigns to conclude a commerical treaty
with the U.S. His rule was absolute; he was a ubiquitous administrator
constantly checking the work of his officials, from whom he exacted the utmost
in conscientiousness.
