Jean Francois BROUSSARD

Jean Francois arrived in Acadie in 1671, on the vessel L'Oranger, which sailed from LaRochelle, France.  He was one of the 50 sent by Jean Baptiste Colbert, Minister of France to King Louis XIV, to populate the colony of Acadie.

His parents name are an inigma. however, research over the last few years has produced the most likely prospect on his mother.

1.  Francois's mother was a missing daughter of a Doucet.  All the known Doucet daughters have been accounted for, and did not marry a Broussard.

2.  His mother was a daughter of a Guillaume Trahan.  There was a Trahan that had not been accounted for.  (A sister to Jeanne Trahan.)

Guillaume and wife , Francoise Carbonneau, 2 daughters and 1 valet, arrived in Acadie, in the 1st census taken at Acadia.  No mention is made of their 2nd daughter.  This unnamed daughter did marry a Broussard and had 1 or more children, died and was buried prior to the 1st census.  The census did not list thoose persons known to have passed away.

Additionally, many researchers have noted that the ship, L'Oranger sailed from France in 1654, and assumed that it carried colonists from France to Acadia.  Many put him and other noted Acadians on this ship.

The fact of the matter is, that the ship did sail in 1654, however it did not sail to Acadia or any other port in the North, but rather sailed to Santo Domingo & directly back to france.  Furthor, no Broussard's were listed on manifest of this ship in either sailing.  This information was furnished by the French Maritime Archives.  The Archives did state that some Broussard's sailed to Quebec, Canada, some years earlier, but names were not listed.

Canadian records listed Francois as a buyer of clothing, from a widow of a trapper who had drowned.  This occured in 1671.

There is a Broussard family established in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, prior to 1671 and efforts are ongoing to find any possible ties with this family.  The family in Montreal is descended from Nicolas Broussard of France.
