Historical Notes:

(1) William Bryan, Jr. known as, "Bryan of Roanoke," established his home near
Big Spring and it became a prominent center of the social life of the
community.  He had three attractive daughters.  One of the suitors who was
often seen at the Bryan mansion was John Cole, the son of Colonel Philip Cole
of the Revolutionary Army.  The family of Colonel Philip Cole began to appear
in the records of Salem Virginia around the 1780's.  The son John won the hand
of Catherine the oldest daughter of William, Jr., and the date of their
marriage is recorded as December 13th, 1786.

In 1821 James Bryan, oldest son of William Bryan, Jr., with his wife
Elizabeth, John and Catherine Cole together with a number of other Salem,
Virginia families moved to Missouri.  John Cole settled about two miles north
of Potosi.  The old homestead may still be seen there.  He had a large family
all born in Virginia.  Among them was Philip Cole, lawyer of Potosi, Watson who
moved to the soutwest corner of the County and George B. Cole, steamboat
captain of the Mississippi and resident of Potosi.
