Historical Notes:
(1) Lewis Nicholas is the only one of the sons of Robert Carter Nicholas who
did not aspire to public life, but found his place in the role of country
squire. On the 1800 tax list for Albermarle County he is shown owning nine
horses, twelve slaves over sixteen years of ages, and two slaves twelve to
sixteen years old. His plantation, Berry Hill, was located in the extreme
southern section of the county near Scottsville. Here he spent his entire life
in the pursuit of farming. Some of his original correspondence on everyday
matters is in the Manuscript section of Alderman Library at the University of
Virginia in Charlottesville.
