John A. WHARTON III

From a newspaper clipping from a Nashville newspaper sent to me by my father, Albert S. McLemore, name of paper and date unknown: "Bodies of Pioneers Removed to Mt. Olivet" "Five Generations of the Wharton Family Now Sleep Together - Old Tomb Transplanted." "The removal of the bodies of John A. Wharton and his wife, Rhoda Morris Wharton, from their resting places to Mount Olivet, recalls a little history of the family which is of interest to their wide connection, both in this city and elsewhere. The bodies have been buried on the old Jessie Wharton place on the Hillsboro Road, now owned by Harry Stokes, and have been removed by members of the last generation to the S.S. Wharton lot at Mount Olivet. The box tomb erected over these pioneer ancestors of the Wharton family is quaint and the wording interesting. John Wharton requested before his death that it be worded as follows: "Here lies the body of John A. Wharton, the father of George, William, John, Austin, Jessie, Samuel, and Dabney." He said that such a record would be of benefit to the generations to come. The date of his birth and death, 1740 - 1827, is also recorded and the slab with its old record has also been removed to Mount Olivet. The Wharton family antedates many of the oldest families in the State. Lord John Wharton, of distinguished English fame, had three sons, Philip, Thomas, and John. Philip died and Thomas became heir to his father's estate and title of Lord. Sir John, being the youngest and very ambitious, came to America in 1760, and settled in Culpepper County, Virginia. He had two sons, William and John, and it was the son, John, who came to Nashville and spent the last years of his life. It is the intention of three members of the family representing the fourth and fifth generation, to have all of their direct ancestors buried in the same lot; to this end John Wharton's son George, and his wife Elizabeth Farrar, have also been removed from their former resting place on the estate of the old Crittenden home on the Dickerson Road and placed in the S.S. Wharton lot by the side of the other graves. Mrs. John B. Garrett, S.S. Wharton, and Mrs. A.M. Elliott are the members of the family who are actively instrumental in having the matter attended to, and through their efforts the Wharton lot at Mount Olivet now has the graves of five generations within its boundaries."
