Mary Elizabeth STRAUSSER (STRAUSER)

Sent by B. Corder.  Sent 5 Mar 2005 by Email, troutlady@charter.net, Carolyn.  She sent a report outline, Descendants of J. B. Strausser.J. B. Strausser obituary.      Mary was one of eleven children born to J. B. Strausser and Margaret West.  Three departed in infancy, one dying at Cambridge, Nebraska at the age of 27, July 10, 1904, leaving to mourn his loss an aged wife and seven children, two brothers, two sisters and a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Three daughters were present at the funeral:  Mrs. Mary Hiatt of Imperial; Mrs. Jake Kutz of Cambridge and Mrs. Anna Kennedy of Sterling, Colorado.

OBITUARY:  Mary Elizabeth Strauser was born December 26, 1868, in Illinois.  In early childhood she came to Nebraska with her parents who settled near Wilber.  Here she grew to womanhood.  July 23, 1888, she was married to Frank Burright.  An only child, a son, was born of this union October 19, 1889. Mr. Burright died and the son followed him in early youth.  September 4, 1891, she was married to Nathan W. Hiatt, of Wilber, Nebraska, and soon afterward moved to Furnas County settling near Cambridge, where the family is well known.  During the past thirty years they have resided in Chase County, mainly, where Mr. Hiatt died in 1925.
Ten children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Hiatt, two dyeing in infancy.  Four sons, J. W. and Donald of Cambridge, Lennie of Imperial and Nathan of Enders;  Mrs. Hattie Siefken, of Imperial, Mrs. Bessie Fisher of Cambridge; Kate Mathews of Omaha and Mrs. Dorothy Unruh of Kirk, Colorado, daughters, survive to share the sorrow of laying away a faithful and devoted mother.  Two brothers and one sister also among immediate relatives are Aaron and Robert of the Hood River section of Oregon and Mrs. Nancy Kutz of Cambridge, and 28 grandchildren, one great grand child.
The burden of sorrow patiently borne has been heavy for Mrs. Hiatt.  She buried three children and two husbands, and her last protracted illness was a painful experience terminating in her death in the Imperial hospital April 19, 1937.  Her courage and kindly ministrations, the bravery with which she met widowhood while laboring to keep the home intact became widely known and won for her a large circle of sympathizing and appreciative friends.  She was a member of the Enders Church of the Brethern, and though deprived of regular attendance was frequently among those who value the joy and fellowship of Divine worship in the church of her choice.  Devout, unassuming, patient, with the will to serve she was well prepared to make the transfer from time to eternity at the age of 68 years, 3 months and 23 days.
Funeral services were conducted at Imperial by Rev. D. G. Wine, April 21, 1937, and interment made in the family lot at Cambridge.  A brief service at the grave was followed by a fervent prayer and benediction by Rev. Bashford of Cambridge, formerly pastor at Imperial.
