Historical Notes:

(1) Anthon de Courtenay, Sire de Courtenay was responsible for the fortifying
of the town of Courtenay and as a result his descendants fell heir to the
Lordship of that town and took the name "de Courtenay" thereafter.  Although it
is not certain whether Anthon de Courtenay ever took that name in life, he is
still referred to on genealogical tables and history books as "de Courtenay,"
though he was probably not born there.
