Jesse M. Hiatt was a Republican, farmer, merchant (of Henry Co., Indiana)., and a Capt. In Civil War --- Co. D, 147 Indiana Reg’t. - and saw service near Harper’s Ferry and Winchester, Va. In 1873/4 he became editor and joint owner with Harry M. Hoover, of Henry Country Times, Newcastle, Indiana. By January, 1875, he had sold his interest in the paper and removed to New Shaton, Mahaska Co., Iowa. From 1875 to 1878 he was in charge of Grammar Dept. of New Sharon High School. Having completed a study of law he was admitted to the bar at Oskaloosa (Iowa). in 1878. In 1879 he removed to Alma, Harlan Co., Nebraska, and in 1880 entered into partnership with J. D. Hurd and commenced publication of the Alma Herald. After a few months he sold his interest in the Herald and devoted his time to law and Trimbune, which in time beame one of the leading country papers of the state, and was published for five years under the firm name of J. M. and J. C. Hiatt. After holding various positions of prominence and influence in civil and political life he was appointed to a position with the U. S. Div. Of Agriculture, in Washington, D.C., and removed there, 1890-4. Later spent two more years in same Division. Member of Christian Church, but of Quaker upbringing. Master Mason, 1861, Cadiz Lodge U. D.; charter member Vanmater Post G. A. R., Alma, Nebraska. (R44).

(Around 1900 Jesse M. Hiatt compiled a Hiatt Genealogy of two or three thousand names, prepared it for publication, but died before having it printed. In 1942 his son, Frank H. Hiatt, loaned the Hiatt manuscript to yours truly, while in the service at Camp Rucker, Alabama, and said material has been incorporated into this present volume, about half of which was duplication of data already compiled. Most of the data on descendants of Jesse M. Hiatt’s grandfather, Richard Hiatt, were compiled by Jesse M. Hiatt, as well as data on several others branches of the family. - editor.)

William Perry Johnson credits this James M. HIATT for much of the work he was able to put together, see page 362 of HH book by William Perry Johnson.
It is also interesting and important to note that Jesse M. HIATT was mentioned as having moved to Alma, Harlan Co., NE, as there are many HIATT families in that area that are not able to prove out their lines.  LA

Hi Larry,

I just joined genealogy.com and saw your postings about having researched the Hiatt family line.  I'd be interested to see if you have any info on my line, and or if I can help you with this particular line.  Here are some of the basics of what I know, which should help you determine if you have this line in your research and books:

Grandmother: Juanita M or L Hiatt b. 10 Dec 1896/Lahoma, OK- d. (married Ira Elmer Vosburg)
G Grandfather: Robert Morris Hiatt b. 29 May 1872 in Indiana - d. 17 Mar 1930 in Oklahoma (Married Eva Ross in NE, Bellvidere Jul 1892). The family eventually settled in Lahoma and then Enid, OK. His occupation was a railway agent, and he was a member of the Freemasons, reaching the level of Master Mason.
GG Grandfather: Jessie M Hiatt b. 1838 - d. 1915 (Married Sarah Jane Haworth in Cadiz, IN Dec 1857). They resided in Washington DC for some time.
