Charles Edward HIATT

                       Sent by Darlene Peterson.
Charles E. Hiatt was the 5th child born to James Wm and Julia Ann Roberts
Hiatt who were both born into pioneer families in Platte County, Mo.  The James Wm Hiatts lived in Jefferson County, Ks when Charles was born 27 Dec 1883 near Winchester.  The James Wm Hiatts moved to Taylor County, Iowa about 1896.  When the Hiatts were living in Adams County, Iowa.  Charles met and married the lovely Pearl McKenzie 26 February 1907.  Pearl and Harry John were the only children of John H. and Candes V. Powell McKenzie of Adams County, Iowa.
When Western South Dakota was opened for settlers, Charles and Pearl Hiatt took advantage of the US Public Land Grants there and received a patent of land in Meade County, SD during the administration of William Howard Taft.  Charles Hiatt built a sod house and farmed their 160 acres (section 20 - Township 11 - North Range 12 - East Black Hills Meridian.
Eleven of the Charles E. and Pearl McKenzie Hiatt's children, seven sons and six daughters were born in various areas of SD.  In 1936 the Hiatt family was living in Mn and in 1949 Charles and Pearl retired to their home in Lawrence, Ks where Charles continued his line of work as agent in the selling of diary equipment.  Charles passed away at Lawrence within several days after suffering a heart attack in January 1952.  Our mother's passing was 30 January 1970 and both parents were interred in Oak Hill Cem. in Lawrence.
Charles E. and Pearl Hiatt were both descendants of ancestries originating from Quaker backgrounds in Ireland, England, Wales, and Scotland.  Historical research confirms the discontent among religious families living in the 17th Century in those European countries mentioned above.  Many of the Quaker families in those countries became sympathetic with the philosophy of Wm Penn the English Quaker and founder of the colony of Pennsylvania in the New World, USA.
