My father, mother, brother(s). and I lived on a farm in northwestern part of Adams Co. when he passed away, from an accident caused from being thrown off a load of wood by a runaway team. My mother and I then moved to Corning, Iowa. She went to her reward on Aug. 30, 1913.”

Obituary James William Hiatt
"Friends of this vicinity were surprised and sorry to learn of the accident and death of J.W. Hiatt, who resided on the Piper farm near Villisca. The funeral was held Monday at the home and body shipped to Corning, burial taking place at Oakland Cemetery at Quincy. Six days previous to his death he was hauling a load of wood to Villisca and driving a team of colts that were quite playful. In passing down a hill, Mr. Hiatt leaned over to apply the break on the wagon, and in some manner dropped one line, causing him to lose control of the team. He lost his balance and fell forward and under the loaded wagon, which passed over his chest. A couple of ribs were broken, his shoulder dislocated and he also received internal injuries, which resulted in death Saturday eveing, February 4, 1911. James William Hiatt was born 23 Dec 1849, to Perlina Cogdill Hiatt and James Anderson Hiatt at Weston, Mo. and was 61 years, 1 month, 12 days old at the time of his death. He was married to Miss Julia Roberts, January 18, 1872. To this union were born eight children, one dying in infancy, Eleanor in 188?. The living are Mrs. Maggie Parks, Will Hiatt, residing near Corning; Mrs. Florence Galbraith, Platte City, Mo; John Hiatt, Jimmie Hiatt, and Charlie Hiatt, residing on claims near Fair Point, (Meade County, SD); and Miss Ida Mae living with her parents. Mr. Hiatt had been a resident of this county for a number of years, but has been managing the Piper farm near Villisca for some time.

"Mrs. J.W. Hiatt (James William Hiatt) died Wednesday evening at 9 o'clock
after an illness from Kidney trouble of several years standing, aged 61 years,
7 months, and 23 days. The funeral was held yesterday (Friday) morning at 10
o'clock at the residence in north Corning and was conducted by Rev. F.L. Roper.
Interment in Oakland Cemetery at Quincy beside her husband, who died February
4, 1911. They lived in Missouri for twenty years with the exception of a short
time in Kansas. In 1893 they came to Iowa and settled in Taylor County and in
1895 came to Adams County, (Iowa). In 1909 they removed to Montgomery County
where Mr. Hiatt died February 4, 1911 after which Mrs. Hiatt returned to this
city (Corning) in March. Eight chidlren were born to Mr. and Mrs. Hiatt, one
(Eleanor in 188?) dying in infancy. The living are: Mrs. Florence Galbraith of
Platte City, Mo; Mrs. Maggie Parks of Conway, (Iowa), John W. Hiatt of Lovell,
SD.; S.E. Hiatt of Lebanon, SD; W.A. Hiatt, James C. Hiatt, and Mrs. Ida Mae
Ross this city (Corning). The children with their wives and husbands were
present at the funeral witht he exception of John. Also G.B. Roberts of New
Market, Mo; R.E. Roberts of Gravity, and John Roberts of Nodaway, brethren of
the deceased with their wives were in attendance at the funeral. Mrs. Hiatt
had many friends in the county who will regret the death of this good lady."
