Brought his family from Greensboro, North Carolina by boat. Settled in Ray County about 8 miles from Knoxville, Missouri. Not only brought his wife but also brought his girlfriend! Liza Hodson. Or her name was Sarah. After his wife left him, he lived with his girlfriend but they never married. It was said he was a good singer and blind in one eye. After the girlfriend died, he moved into a shack on his son Newton's farm. He didn't get along too well with his daughter-in-law, and one day while he was gone, the shack burnt. After that he bummed around, staying mostly with his daughter Mary Elizabeth and his granddaughter LouEtt Mae(Bales) Lane. He is buried at Black Oak Cemetary.
He also had the worst of manners. When Roy Thane Hatfield was courting Maggie Lane, LouEtta Mae's daughter, he'd have a habit of coming out on the front porch of the house across the road from them and relieving himself.
