ON ISRAEL EDDY, SON of EZEKIEL and MARY
Israel had a toll road in Eddyville, had to pay toll to go thru the toll gate. People did not go around because he owned the only ground that had a shallow enough spot to ford the Yaquina River.
From records in possession of William Perry Eddy in Corvallis, Oregon as of July 1993.See page 366 of Eddy Family in America, 1930. He settled as a pioneer inOregon in Lincoln Co., where there is at present a town named Eddyville in his honor.
Israel had many trades and talents. He practiced dentistry, also fitted glasses, a few pair of which William Eddy has in Corvallis.

There is a gravestone in the Mt. Union Cem., Benton Co., OR that reads:
W. F. Eddy ___ 19 [29] Mar 1871:Aged 38 Y, 17 D, Row 10, SW, 62-1
Could this be William Dustin? It is common, as evidenced in other books taken from cem. stones, to miss initials from worn stones, etc. D could have been missed for F. As his father went to OR in 1863, likely that William was with them and logical for this to be part of this family? Larry Anderson, taken from cemetery record books in library of Corvallis, OR, 29 Jun 2004.
There is a Francis Clare Eddy as father to Robert Francis Eddy, born June 1, 1944 in Corvallis, OR as given in index to live births. Mother is Erma Magdelinea Grey. page 240. Could this be a line of Francis Elvin? Perhaps Francis Clare a son of Francis Elvin?

From family bible in possession of William Perry Eddy in Corvallis, Oregon as of July 1993. Also family bible says born in Lehilier, Bluewater Co., Minn.
The notes of Mrs. Carl, Ruth, Coffman, 16 Jan 1989, give the date of William Pickens death as 27 Jan 1851. From Mary Pickens, "Monroe says William was born Jan 27th, 1760, and died Jan 27th, 1851. His wife, Edith, was born 1761, died 1796, her father was Daniel Howland and mother Mary Slocum."
History of Erie Co., N.Y. Vol. I, page 587, gives William Pickens, father of Joshua, moved to Collins N.Y. in 1843. Another record states that he moved to Collins, N.Y. in 1815. Another note says that William, father of Joshua, was among the prominent settlers of North Collins, Erie Co., N.Y. in 1809. (Mary Pickens)
Ricketson Family records indicate that William died in 1831. Roba's estate wasn't probated until 1858, but William isn't mentioned in her will, so he is presumed dead before 1844, when she died.
Original research was done by my mother, Ruby Pearl Hiatt (Casey) Anderson who began her work as early as 1958.

Orange Smith, found in Census index of Chittenden, VT 1790, pg 24 family ages in range, 02, 02, 01, 00, 00 This might fit the dates of Orange Smith, I have never found anything on him elsewise, nor other children. This is the only Orange Smith I have been able to discover, esp. this era.
VT is the area of the SMITH family associated with Joseph SMITH, founder of LDS Church. This family goes back to 1600's, look into lines connected to the SMITH line of LDS.Hi Larry and Beverly,
Well, I think I said I intended to review all the reasons why I thought the mother of Daniel and Orange Smith Pickens could be Flora A Smith, a daughter of Wheeler B Smith and Persilla Sterdevant.
it took me quite a while to put this into writing -- I sure hope it’s coherent.
Here is what I did. I began my search with the name “Orange Smith,” but couldn’t seem to get very far with that. So I started to look at the Smiths in Erie County – particularly around Collins and Evans – and in Chautauqua Co. and in Cattaraugus Co, To make a long story longer, there were lots of Smiths!
There was an Augustus Smith, a Barak Smith, a Caleb Smith, an Ebenezer Smith, a Nathaniel Smith -- The first two came from Danby VT. I was lucky enough to purchase a copy of the Danby meeting records, and I searched for the Smith families. Also the rootsweb world connect has trees for Augustus and Barak. Another thing that made it complicated is the intermarriages of some of these Smiths with other families!
Anyway, the Smith line that looks the best is Wheeler Branch Smith, b abt 1777 and wife Priscilla Sturdevant.
One of their daughters is mentioned in a genealogy book:
Caller, James M, and Mrs. M. A. Ober, Genealogy of the Descendants of Lawrence and Cassandra Soutwick of Salem, Mass., Choate & Co., MA, 1881. From google.books.com. Pages 184, 232.
From this book, page 232:
"Job [Southwick]... married, Dec. 7, 1815, Sophia Smith, at Collins, N.Y., daughter of Wheeler B. and Priscilla Smith, of Erie. Co, N.Y., born Oct 1, 1798, at Kent, Litchfield Co., Conn., died March, 1871. They lived at Brant, Erie Co, N.Y. He was a farmer and nursery-man at Collins., N.Y."
So this establishes that Wheeler B Smith and “Percilla” came from Kent, Litchfield CT.
Other possibilities for CT:
I found the book by George C. Woodruff, A Genealogical Register of the inhabitants of the town of Litchfield, Conn. And the Barbour vital records for Kent are online. But I didn’t find anything.
However, I did see a Reuben Smith of Kent, Litchfield Co, CT, born 1741, son of Josiah Smtih and Abigail Stoddard. Simeon had a son Orange, b 1765. But I could not find any other trace of Orange or of his brother, Simeon Jr b 1774. Also three daughters, Huldah, b 1763, Roxinda, b 1768, and Sabra, b 1770. Simeon Sr also had a brother named Wait Smith. Simeon Sr remained in CT. I could not trace the children. This line remains a possibility. The info came from the newenglandancestors.org site.
I looked at all the census records, and I’ve copied them, at the end of this Email. I also found several other people who were researching Wheeler B Smith, and descend from various children of Wheeler Smith. Noone can find a family for Wheeler, although it’s possible that the line might include a marriage between a “Wheeler” and a “Branch.” Similarly, his wife is said to be Priscilla Sturdevant, and she is said to be the daughter of a Paul Sturdevant and Rhoda Lake, of Kent, Litchfield CT; but the Sturdevant relatives have been difficult to locate as well.
The six children of Wheeler Smith are shown below, along with the slot where I think Flora A. fits.

I copied below the census records for Wheeler, which show how I figured that they had a “missing” daughter, and that Flora A. was the “missing” daughter.
Some things which make me think this is the correct line:
Notice the marriage of the daughter Sophia, b 1798 to Job Southwick – one of the granddaughters sketched out the family tree that I have attached. It’s difficult to get used to (or at least, it was for me!). The left side has the Smiths, the right side has the Southwicks. I ignored the right side. Notice on the left side an entry for “Annie” who married “Dan Perkens“ /Peckins. To me, this says that Flora Ann was called “Annie” and that she married Howland Pickens. The sketch has other mis-spellings for names, so the fact that she didn’t get the name right seems acceptable (also he was called Howland, not William, which is close to “Dan”). Also a few other entries have no children or are incomplete – this tells me that the author didn’t know them very well (in the Pickens case, she wouldn’t know them too well, as they moved to Iowa).
Daniel Pickens named a son Wheeler B.
Flora A and Howland Pickens used the names Priscilla, Clarissa for their children.
Flora A and Howland’s daughter Priscilla named her first child Flora.
Wheeler left Litchfield Co sometime after 1798 (when his daughter Sophia was born) and 1800. He went north to Hamilton, Chenango Co (now Madison Co), NY. The history of Hamilton states it was settled by a group from Kent, Litchfield Co, CT (which fits in). Wheeler was in Hamilton for the 1800 census, and by 1810 had settled in Willink (now North Collins), Niagara Co (now Erie Co), NY, which was known then as the Holland Purchase. He was in the area for 1810, 1820, 1830 and 1840. Wheeler died in 1845, and Persilla died in 1855.
Wheeler Smith had a neighbor in Hamilton, Chenango (now Madison) Co – John Blanchard, whose wife was named Clarissa Ackley. John Blanchard came to the Willink, Niagara Co area also, and they were again neighbors…. I think Wheeler and Persilla’s daughter Clarissa could be named after Clarissa Blanchard, they were probably very good friends. And Wm Howland and Flora’s Clarissa was probably named after Flora’s sister Clarissa.
Mysteries and Other stuff in progress
Wheeler’s seems to have had a brother Charles (see 1800 census, below). Charles left a Will, and I’ve sent for a copy of the Will just to see what it says. The father of Charles and Wheeler might have been Ephraim Smith (see 1800 census).
An Orange Smith shows up in 1850, and I sure can’t figure out how he fits into the picture. I’ve highlighted the 1850 census for the son Harlow Smith, below. This one has me stumped. Where has Orange been all these years?
William Howland Pickens is accounted for in NY after his marriage for 1830 -- But he has disappeared for 1840. Possibly he was in PA, but I can’t identify him there either! He shows up again for 1850. The diary of Daniel Pickens refers to “Philo” and a Philo Pickens died of consumption in Brighton in 1860. He is a mystery. I am wondering if he is another son. He was 24 when he died in 1860, so he was born in 1836. He should show up on the 1840 census for Wm Howland Pickens, if we could identify it.
Roba Lawton Pickens, the step-mother of William Howland Pickens, is listed for “letters of Testamentary” in the Erie Co Courthouse – so I sent away for them, just to see what they contain. She died in Erie Co 1850-1856.
I’ve looked for a researcher to go to the Erie Co Courthouse to check for Deeds and probates – but so far I haven’t been able to find one.
Whew! I think that’s all! Please, let me have some feedback, I’d like to hear what you think. I’m not 100% positive this is the right family, but it does have some characteristics that seem mesh. In my mind, the name Orange Smith is the major stumbling block.
I‘ve also convinced myself that the wife of Wm Howland Pickens was Flora Ann Smith, and not Mary Jane. I think because of the biographies of Orange Pickens and Daniel Pickens. And also the middle initial “A” could stand for “Ann,” which would fit the Southwick family tree drawing.
Hope this all makes a little bit of sense!
Kathy
