Marriage notes for John Anderson and Nancy Cameron, "There is a copy of John's marriage certificate which was located by Archie Anderson. The license was applied for Feb. 21, 1882. Date of marriage Feb. 23, 1882. His place of residence was listed as Washington Co, KS. Nancy's was Cass Co., NE. They were married by C. F. Graves, Pastor of the Congressional Church."
Wedding license had 22 Feb 1882 at Weeping Water, Cass Co., NE to Nancy Jane Cameron, Age 15. nacny's parents were Allen A. Cameron and Mary J. Mussey.
A note of Opal Lousin said that John died near St. Joe, Mo.
Pearl Emory Anderson wrote on 20th June 1973: "John Franklin was astrongman with the circus. One of the fastest runners of the 100 yard dash in 10 seconds.)
Aug 1979 A Brief story of Archie Anderson's search for his uncle John Anderson, oldest brother of Thomas Anderson, who had died at age 30, but no relative seemed to know where. A family bible gave the date as 27 Sep 1889.Since boyhood Archie had been fascinated with stories of his uncle, who had been in the Campbell Circus as a trick rider and stunt man, had been known to be married to Nancy Jane Cameron, a part Mohawk Indian girl, and at the time of his death had 4 children. Another child, Dan, was born after his fathers death, and in 1894, at the death of Nancy Jane four of the children had been sent to Neb. to John's parents, Allen R. and Hannah Anderson who raised them with the help of other relatives.Members of the family had heard that Thomas had gone to the Troy, Kansas area at the time of John's death, but not much seemed to be passed down to later relatives.Archie became obsessed with the idea of finding where John was buried. After much talking, letter writing, etc., it was suggested that he was married in Weeping Water Area, so in 1978, Archie and Clara made a trip to Weeping Water and did find and get a zerox copy of the wedding license. Included in that paper was the name of Nancy Jane's parents: Father - Allen A. Cameron, and mother Mary J. Mussey. At that time we could find nothing more about their whereabouts. We began writing to various agencies trying to find a death certificate, and not until the summer of 1973, did we find a likely trail. We wrote to the State Library of Kansas, and they referred us to a genealogist who would search records for $4.00 a hour and by giving her all the info we could, she soon wrote back with a letter stating she had found a news item from Doniphan, Kansas telling exactly what we were searching for - she enclosed a Xerox copy of the microfilm page of the Troy Chiefton, Troy Kansas, 3 Oct 1889. Doniphan column new item, as follows:
"John Anderson and family, from Nebraska, came down to Geary City, visiting relatives. The man was taken sick and from report was sick nearly two weeks before medical aid was called in. Finally they moved down to Doniphan, and Dr. Moore was called in and did all he could for him, but he died. They were very poor and the people here administered to their wants as best they could. The trustee was called in and arranged for the funeral. He was buried in the Doniphan Cemetery (Later in the same column) The man Anderson who died here last week, leaves a wife and four children, they went to Nebraska with relatives."
This item give us needed info, and on Mon, Aug 27, Archie, Clara and Daughter, Jolene Darnold started to Troy, KS.
We left Odell, Neb. at 9:30 on that Monday morning and arrived at Troy at noon, at dinner at the local restaurant, then went to the county courthouse to see what we might find that could be useful to us. We had no been able to find a Geary City on the map and found out it is now an abandoned town, but was about 5 miles from Doniphan. We had thought if we could find the name of the relatives they were visiting it might shed some light, so we asked to see records of people living in Geary City in 1889, which turned out to be in Wayne precinct. The records were in nicely bound books, but were in an attic room where they had just been piled in stacks, with no logical order, hodgepodge on the floor - it was a hot day, the room stuffy and small, but even the very uncomfortable, Jolene and Clara spent a good hour finding the right book with an alphabetized list of residents in 1889. (Archie wasn't able to breath in close air like that so had gone to the car to wait.) At long last we found the right volume, and found the name of Allen A. Cameron age 89, and Mary J. Cameron age 78, these being Nancy Jane's parents.
At the court house a clerk, very kindly drew a map showing us how to find the Doniphan cemetary which is northeast of the town. A very irregular road and she even suggested we contact the cemetary caretaker who lived on the road en route to the cemetery. When we arrived at that home, Robert and Iva Hink, Iva found no record of John Anderson, but volunteered to go with us to the cemetary and show us where the "Potters Field" was, and we were delighted to have her guide us. The cemetary is on top of a very high hill - 3/4 miles west of the Missouri River wooded all around. So we felt very certain we have been within a matter of a few feet the burial place of John F. Anderson. We left there about 5:30 and headed toward Atchison, then on west to Holton, and south of Mayetts where we inquired where some "dug wells" might be as Archie was now in search of a well that his Grandfather Allen R. had dug for the gov't on the Pottawatomie Indian Reservation, having some sons to help him, at least George and Thomas had helped. We were directed about 4 miles into the reservation to a well that was still being used to water cattle, had been dug and walled very neatly and sturdily with rock - so Archie was satisfied that at last he had seen a well his grandfather and father had dug back in the 1800's.By the time we got back to Holton for supper, it was 7:30, but we came on home arriving back in Odell, Neb. at 11:00 PM.From a note of Opal Lousin, 3 Dec 1992. ..."You probably have this information which I hurriedly copied at Archie Anderson's home:

Anderson's son was John Franklin Anderson b. 29 July 1859 d. 27 Sept 1889 m. 22 Feb. 1882 at Weeping Water, Cass Co., Neb. to Nancy Jane Cameron, age 15 b. 6 March 1867 and died 8 May 1894 and they had:1) Jesse b. 31 Dec 18822) John Franklin, Jr. born 31 Oct 1884 killed by lightning in 1903.3) Allen A. b. 11 Oct 1886 d. 19714) Rose b. 9 March 18885) Isaac Daniel b. 16 December 1889 d. 26 Nov 1974 m. Charles William Jr. was born.
Information sent by Archie and Clara Anderson of Odell, Neb. Most all the information on the families of Thomas were provided by Archie and Clara Tollman Anderson. Tammy, with myself (Larry Anderson) and children visited with Clara and her son, David Anderson at their home outside Odel on Sunday, 16 May 1993. We also were able to visit our last living Anderson 1st cousin of the grandchildren of Allen and Hannah Welch Anderson, Florence Anderson Pool. She is 97 and her mind is sharp and very alert. She is getting a bit frail but full of spirit and wonderful knowledge of our family. I will hope to visit her again and be able to have her and Clara tell me more of our families history. (Following this visit Tanya parted ways and I never did get back, for years we struggled over divorce, etc.)
Mahaska County, IA did not by law collect birth and death certs until 1880. Therefore, no state document of birth is available for Thomas Anderson.
Thomas was a farmer.
From a letter of Jane Hartgrave to Glenn Anderson, Aug 29, 1958 she included: Tom and Lewis are buried at Steele City, Neb.See charts sent by Betty Holmes, 1150 S. Maine St., Fallon, Nevada 89406. The chart shows born March 11, 1867 not 1866.??

Margaret or Maggie, Ulch, was born in Marshalltown, Iowa in 1879 and died in 1955 in Steele City, NE. When Maggie and Tom Anderson were married, Tom worked around wherever a farmer might need extra help. Jobs changed often and whenever possible, the couple would move if there was a vacant house nearer the job. Florence said there seemed to be many vacant houses then. This caused the children to be in many different schools during their young lives. When Tom got to trying to farm, as a renter, he often moved, the most common time was march 1st. (Started about 1905 to rent farms.)
Florence (Pool) tells, "When I was a baby, really just a few days old, they moved to a different farm, wagon and horses of course, and the baby was wrapped in a "comfort" (A bulky quilt. P A neighbor picked me up to carry me in the house and almost lost me out of the comfort. There were many good laughs about that man almost losing me."
It seems the family always lived within a 10 mile radius of Steele City. Tom was born in 1866 at Oskaloosa, IA, but the family moved to near Fairbury to a homestead in 1871. At the time of Tom's death, the family was living about 1 3/4 miles S.W. of Steele City, on a "Cacek Farm Ranch", probably the place they lived longer than any other place. (This place was also the first home of Archie and Clara Anderson, son of Tom.) The morning of Tom's death, he was carrying 2 pails of skimmed milk, etc., to feed the hogs or calves, and out in the yard - suddenly dropped dead! january 1930. By then all the family had left home and were marreid except Archie who lived at home, rented land and farmed.
As to Maggie's health --- after Marvin, her 9th child was born who was born in August 1910, she had much troubles with what Florence called "Dropsy", the encyclopedia says "as cities", Fluid accumulates inside abdominal cavity, abnormally. In spite of that seh mothered twin girls December 27, 1911, and Merle was born on Dec. 12, 1912.
Sometime in the last area she was bed ridden for a time. (May ask more later). At times she was called on to do neighborhood nursing type help, such as at childbirth. "Clara, "At the time of my miscarriage of my first child in Jan 1933, she was helping in a Steele City home and came home to care for me. In those days we were kept in bed for 10 days. What a change to now, 1993!")
In the spring of 1933, a sale was held, Maggie bo't a small house in Steele City and Archie and Clara moved to Marsland for 17 years. maggie later married Earl Gorham who came to the are as harvest help, stayed around, etc. Florence said he was a kind, clean man though uneducated, he was kind to Maggie.
In late life, Maggie had trouble with slow heart, a packed bowel and used oxygen.
Buried 8 miles west of Steele City, Neb. at Rose Hill Cem.
