Notes

Jonathan LOVE

Hasten Frances is the brother to Richard's wife Nancy Frances and he ahs
been the bondsman for numerous Love marriages.  I beelieve if the bond itself
was located it would likst Jonathan not John but I will have to look into this
further.

Jonathan Love was born in 1793, Westfield MM, Surry Co., Nc. He married Cynthia White in 1819 and before 1840 decided to leave NC. to move to Hendricks Co. IN. He was well into education as was his entire family. We believe he was a school teacher in Hendricks Co., at least up to 1850. I have just reciently found this out and an expecting more on him and his family.

Benjamin MCDONALD II

Historical Records of Old Frederick Co., Va. and see the West Va. Advocate pg. 29-30 Oct. Issue, 1991. These records were found in a recently discovered family bible published nearly 200 years ago.  It has been passed down through a chain of descendants and was located in Calif.

Genalogical information on first families of Back Creek and Cacopon valleys are found on a family record page in the book.
Original owner of the rare book was Benjamine McDonald (1745-1826), an
immigrant of Scotish origin, to Frederick County, Va.  McDonald served in the
Rev. War in teh First Virginia Regiment, Continental Line.  He lived on Timber Ridge in Frederick Co.
The Bible was sought by a community of researchers for almost a century,
but few persons believed that the McDonald old Bible was extant. It is believed to be one of the greatest Bible discoveries among persons who lived in this region.
Published in 1793, the book was purchased by Benjamine McDonald in 1801.
Over years, it deteriorated and, in 1973, the fragile book was restored by a
descendant.
West Va. Advocate, Sept 14, 1987 McDonald Family History
Maud Pugh referred to him as "Old Benjamin" McDonald to distingish him from his son Benjamin Jr. (1807-17874) and two other younger, Benjamin McDonalds.  However, "Old Benjamin" McDonald's father was also called Benjamin McDonald.  The latter resided in Frederick Co., Va. and his children intermarried with some of the first families of the area, including Cather, Caudy, Hiett, Kackley and Pugh.
I have received many letters from persons seeking information on Benjamin the elder (1745- 1826), but I have not done enough original research to answer the difficult questions: such as his origin in Scotland, the maiden name of his first wife, and so forth.  Eventually these questions will be answered, as more researchers investigate the existing primary sources.
It is known that the elder Benjamin McDonald was a veteran of the
Revoluntionary War, having served in the 1st Virginia Regiment, Continental
Line, as a private.  Patrick Henry was the first commander of this reigment,
but he resigned before McDonald joined the service on Sept 4, 1781.  Old
Benjamin was discharged on July 6, 1783.  In 1785, he was given 100 acres of
bounty land in what is now Harrison Co., W.Va.  This was the standard award for privates who served in the military for this length of time.
After the war, McDonald resided in Frederick Co., Va. on Timber Ridge, on the drains of Isaacs Creek.  Also, he purchased a tract of land on North River, in Hampshire County, Va.  It is possible that he lived in Hampshire Co., for a period of time, after his first wife died, because all of his children married into pioneer families of Hampshire County.
The maiden name of his first wife in not known, but her first name was
Massie.  His second wife was widow named Mercy (Wilkinson) Nixon Reed,
according to a deposition in a court case.  Five children were born to
Benjamin's first marriage and one child from the second union.  Complete vital information on the children of Benjamin I and their spouses has not been published, as far as I know.....
Margaret Farmer Shanholtz (Mrs. Ellis Shanholtz) of Cacapon Bridge, W. Va. is a descendant of Benjamin and Margaret (Hiett) McDonald II.  The name
Margaret has been passed down many times in her branch of the McDonald -Hiett-Farmer family.  Margaret is the proud owner of the picture of
Margaret Hiett McDonald (1778-1846); the Samuel Farmer family bible
(1808-1848); and several historic letters which were used in this article.
One old letter, written and signed by Benjamin and Margaret Hiett on Dec
20, 1840, at North River Mills, Va. contains valuable family information not
recorded in court records.  It was addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Farmer
(their daughter and son-in-law), New Hope, Lincoln Co., Mo.  The letter was
received on Feb 6, 1841, according to the registration on the outside of the
letter.  Margaret Farmer Shanholtz is the keeper of this historical letter.
The handwriting and expression of thoughts show that Benjamin McDonald II
was a well-educated man.  He sent news about relatives and neighbors from the
North River area.  Some of the items were: ["Martha" is believed to have been
Martha Hiett who married George Moreland]  Mary, Benjamin's daughter, married
Minor Furr in Sept 1840.  Evan McDonald, Benjamin's son, married again, in Oct 1840, his bride being Margaret Ann Stump, daughter of Benjamin Stump....
Margaret Frances Farmer, daughter of Samuel, was born one day before one
child of Benjamin and Amy McDonald II was born.  Margaret Farmer's birth date
was Jan 5, 1840.  Benjamin (III) child, Susan McDonald was born one day before or after Jan 5th of that year.  According to Maud Pugh, Susan McDonald married Benjamin Foreman.  I know nothing about this Benjamin Foreman....
The summer and fall of 1840 were very dry and crops suffered.  A 22 inch
snow fell at North River Mills, on Dec 3-4, 1840.  The letter concluded with
the prices of farm grain.  These genealogical and historical tidbits are
priceless, because most of these facts are not available in the public records.

Margaret HIETT

West Virginia Advocate, Sept 14, 1987.
The Hiett name was one of the first names to inhabit the North River Mils section of the county.  The first public road built in that area was in 1750:
between George Hiett's residence at North River, through Joseph Edward's land along the Cacapon River, to Capt. Jeremiah Smith's residence on Back Creek, in Frederick County, Va. Capt. Smith and James Caudy were two of the most successful Indian fighters in Cacapon and Back Creek valleys, during the mid-1700s.  As an interesting tidbit, Evan Hiett married one of Capt. Jeremiah Smith's daughters named Sarah Smith.
Most of the early families who settled permanently in the North River Mills area, during the 1700s and early 1800s, were related to, or associated with the Hiett family in someway.
The McDonald old house was large enough to have served as an inn during the 1800s.  The house is now vacant.  It was built high on the hillside, for protection against flood waters.
Behind the abandoned house is an old road bed with crosses Pine Mountain leading in the direction of Sandy Ridge.  It appears that this old road led from Benjamin McDonald's house on North River, past the residence of John Hawkins and John Kidwell, to Adam Loy's house on the east side of Grape Ridge, and crossed the Great Wagon Road (northern route) to Evan Hiett's house on Sandy Ridge.  The scenario would have been prior to 1850.  Evan Hiett's house, now about 200 years old, is still standing.  John Whitacre owns the Sandy Ridge farm and lives in the old house.
Margaret Farmer Shanholtz (Mrs. Ellis Shanholtz) of  Cacapon Bridge, W. Va. is a descendant of Benjamin and Margaret Hiett McDonald II.  The name "Margaret" has been passed down many times in her branch of the McDonald -Hiett- Farmer family.  Margaret is the proud owner of the picture of Margaret Hiett McDonald (1778-1846); the Samuel Farmer family Bible; (1808-1848); and several hsitoric letters.

The summer and fall of 1840 were very dry and crops suffered.  A 22-inch snow fell at North River Mills, on Dec 3-4, 1840.  The letter concluded with the prices of farm grain. Thru out the letter was also given birth and marriage dates of different families.
