Harry Lee PICKENS

Found in Estes Family Tree.  In the 1916 directory of Omaha, Neb. Harry L. Pickens is living at 2415 N. 22d. St. with son Jonathan also listed there.

Harry Pickens had been one of the first to be interested in helping my mother, Ruby HIATT ANDERSON, to put the family history together, providing help with names and stories.  He was a very generous and kind man but was killed by a gang of robbers that broke into his house and beat him up.  He was robbed once and beaten and then a few weeks later they returned to rob him again, beating him and putting him in the hospital where he died from his injuries.  The guilty parties were released without punishment.

From Betty L. Koger, by Email, 18 Sept 2000, grandma36@juno.com
I found two articles in the newspaper re my Uncle Harry Pickens' death.  Here's one of them and the other is quite redundant.

80 YEAR-OLD MAN BEATEN BY RUFFIANS IN OWN HOME (12/1/1969)

An 80 year old man reported in serious condition Monday after intruders knocked him unconscious in his home about 8 P.M., Sunday, police said.
Harry L. Pickens, 3821 North 18th Street, went to Immanuel Medical Center early Monday with broken ribs he received in the attack, police said.
Pickens, who is white, said three or four Negro males, all about 16 years old, forced their way into his house after he answered his doorbell, officers reported.
One of the youths struck him in the head with a club, Pickens said.  When he awoke a few minutes later, the youths were gone and a phonograph and some records were missing.
My Aunt Esther Pickens (Harry Pickens' sister) wrote me regarding the incident.  Apparently Uncle Harry Pickens lasted just 24 days and suffered intense pain.  He had many broken ribs.  It came very swiftly at the last, a blood clot.  She states a $300 record player, all of his records, his guns, one of his shot guns valued at $148.00, the bill fold and money, radio, kodak and a lot of clothes.  She was very disturbed as the newspaper stated he died of "Natural Causes".  (A $300 record player was an expensive one in those days, also the shot gun at $148.00).
He was 80 years old when he died. The kids that were responsible for the attack were taken to court.  The Judge "slapped their wrist" and released them to their parents so they can go out and do it again!  (Betty L. Koger)

By Betty Koger:
The party you were speaking of that lived in Omaha, NE was my uncle Harry, my dad's brother.  There were five of us "Kids" and all of the "kids" of the Pickens family, I was Uncle Harry and Aunt Anna's favorite.  They used to pick me up, I lived in Council Bluffs, IA, and took me to their place to visit.  Aunt Anna took me on my first elevator ride.  She took me to the first circus, would buy me clothes and a brand new toothbrush!!!

Further note by Betty L.  Sept 18, 2000
I don't recall my Uncle Harry being beaten and robbed two times.  He was an extrodinary person, well liked by all he knew.  Being his favorite in the Pickens family, I feel sure I would have been told about it.  Aunt Esther lived in Omaha too and would have told about it.  Uncle Harry lived in a nice area for years ... the area deteriorated, but he would not move.  He always lived in the same house as long as I can remember.  I was totally unaware of him having a son, Jonathan, could have been prior to my birth?  I have no records of him.
