Capon Valley 1698 to 1940 by Maud Pugh. They at first lived at Pleasant
Dale W.Va. where Doctor had a good practice and where their children were
born. Later, the family removed to Romney where better schools facilites were
offered.
After the children had grown up. Dr. and Mrs. Shull spent some years in Ft. Lauderdale, Flor. where Dr. hoped to regain his healt and where he bought
property, but after the destructive storm there the family returned to their
home in Romney.
Sent by Michael Charles: Margaret Ann Hiett was born at Sandy Ridge,
Hampshire Co., WVa the eldest of three girls. In 1889 she became the third
wife of the prominent local Physician, Dr. James William Shull. They
established their home at Pleasant Dale, W.Va. where all five of their children were born.
Mrs. Shull was an avid reader of historical novels of the time and named
her children for various characters in the stories she liked best. Dr. Shull
was born at Marlboro, Frederick Co., Va on the plantation of his parents,
Daniel and Mary Jane Brown Shull. During the civil war Daniel joined the
Confederate forces as a Captian of the Cavalry. Unfortunately the Shull
plantation suffered the fate of so many at that time being burned by the Union forces. Dr. Shull attended the University of Maryland in Baltimore from which he earned his doctorate eventually establishing his practive in Romney, W.Va. in 1890. During the 50 yers of his practice his philanthropic activity saw the erection of Romney's first hospital, the Disciples of Christ Church and many similar causes. In 1916, the Shull's built a winter home in Fort Lauderdale, Flor. where Dr. Shull could manage his various investments in that state, Dr. and Mrs. James W. Shull are buried at Indian Mound Cem., Romney, W Va.References:

Ione Josephine Shull, eldest daughter of Dr. James W. and Margaret Ann Hiett Shull was born at Pleasant Dale, W.Va and attended public schools in Romney, WVa. She became an accomplished pianist and in 1909 graduated from Bethany College, Bethany WVa with a Bachelors Degree in Music. Her abilities were such that she was recommended to the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore, Maryland where in 1911 she was one of only a few women to receive a Master's Degree in Music. In 1912, she married Henry Harrison Cookus of Romney W Va descendant of Justice John Hatch 1637 pioneer to Maryland and Dr. John Briscoe who accompanied Lord Baltimore on the Ark and Dove to Maryland. Mr. Cookus was engaged in the hotel busiess owning and managing many hotels across the country from New York to Florida including the Warwick in Philadelphia and Beach City, Hollywood, Flor. Ill fated resort destroyed by the 1926 Hurrican. In 1917 Mrs. Cookus joined the United Daughters of the Confederacy by right of her grandfather, Capt. Daniel Shull and she helped found the Ft. Loudin Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution in Winchester, Va. by right of descent from Evan Hiett, Quaker minister who aided the American Army as they passed through Virginia. She was also a member of the National Society Dames of the Court of Honor. For most of her life, Ione Josephien Cookus pursued her career as a concert pianist and played the role of hostess for her husband's various hotels. Mr. and Mrs. Cookus were fortunate to have had the opportunity to meet many famous people such as President and Mrs. Calvin Coolege, Marshall Foch of World War I fame and U.S. Soviet Ambassador and Mrs. Joseph E. Davies. Mr. Cookus died at their Washington D.C. home in 1948 where upon Mrs. Cookus moved premanently to their winter home in Ft. Lauderdale. In 1954 she started yet another career becoming a teacher of the deaf at the Florida State School for the Deaf and Blind at St. Augustine, Flor. until her retirement in 1969. Mrs. Cookus died at the age of 90 at her home in St. Augustine Flor.
