George Washington Drury
George Washington Drury,60, former resident of Independence but recently a
resident of rt. 2, Dayton, died Friday in Dallas after a four days' illness.
Funeral services were Tuesday at the Henkle and Bollman Chapel at 2 P.M.
Interment was in the Dallas IOOF Cemetery.
Mr. Drury was born May 11, 1890 in Payson, Utah, son of Mr. and Mrs. George
Washington Drury, Sr. He was married to Rebecca Jane Hiatt at Baker, June 22,
1914. Before coming to Independence in 1939 he had lived at Union and Baker.
He had been at Dayton for the past two months.
Mr. Drury was a member of the Latter Day Saints Church.
Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Rebecca Drury, Rt 2, Dayton; three daughters,
Mrs. Richard Raines, Gleneden Beach, Mrs. Lloyd Duston, Aberdeen, Wash., and
Mrs. T.W. Robbins, Taft; two sons, Jess O. Drury, Rt 2, Dayton, and George W.
Drury, Salem; six sisters, Mrs. Mary Lords, Deerlodge, Mont., Mrs. Frank
Sinnott, Glide, Mrs. Sherman James, Tacoma, Wash., Mrs. Ella Blume, Dallas,
Mrs. C.L. Jones, and Mrs. C. H. Bloom, both of Baker; and ten grandchildren.
Salem, July 20, 1939 Charles Drury, 17, son of Mr. and Mrs. G.W. Drury of
the Silver Creek Falls Community, 30 miles east of here, was brought to a local
hospital Wednesday afternoon with a fractured skull and other injuries suffered
when his head struck bottom while he was diving into a swimming hole on Silver
Creek. Several other youngsters swimming with Drury dived in after him when he
failed to come to the surface.
His condition was reported by hospital attendents to be serious.Injury Is Fatal to Charles Drury
Charles Drury, 17 year old son of Mr. and Mrs George Drury of Sublimity,
who broke his neck in a dive into Silver Creek Wednesday, died yesterday at a
local hospital.
The youth misjudged the water's depth and struck his head on a submerged
rock.
Surviving are the parents, two brothers and three sisters, Jess and Wilber
of Sublimity, Mrs. Rachel Jones of Dorris, Calif. Mrs. Elva Eades of Klamath
Falls and Mary Drury of Sublimity.
Services will be held Monday at 10 Am at Clough Barrick Chapel.
Jess O. Drury, 69, of Salem died Monday.
He was born in Caldwell, Idaho, and was raised in Idaho and Oregon. He
moved from Woodburn to Salem in 1986. He was a Navy veteran of World War II,
serving in the Pacific Fleet as a water tender first class.
He married Betty Marie Busick on Nov 26, 1943, in Salem.
He retired in Jun 1982 from his position as a maintenance supervisor at the
Orgon Department of Transportation.
He was a past member of the Woodburn Elks and a member of the Salem
Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include his wife; daughters, Patricia Sue Lewis and Rose Marie
Hedlund, both of Salem; son, Jess A. Drury of Springfield; brother, George W.
Drury of Stayton; sisters, Elva Dustin of Chico, Calif. and Mary Tremayne of
Williams, Calif; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will begin at 2 p.m. Friday in Restlawn mortuary.
Concluding services and interment will follow in Restlawn Memory Gardens.
Visiting will be from noon to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 9 am to service
time Friday at Restlawn mertuary.

Jan 18, 1923 - May 4, 1992Jess and Betty met in 1938 at Silver Creek Falls, on top of Silverton
Mountain, Oregon when they lived next door to each other. Our fathers were
wood cutters there.
Jess entered the US Navy on May 25, 1942 in Salem, Oregon. His assignment
was in the Pacific Fleet and his Reception Center was in San Diego, Calif. He
served as Fireman 2nd Class on the Ship USS Long DMS - 12 from July 1942 to Nov
1943. In transferring from this ship to the next one, he had a leave and Jess
and Betty were married on November 26, 1943 in Salem, Oregon.
His next assignment was on the USS Nehenta Bay CVE-74 at Bremerton,
Washington, serving from Novembr 1943 to July 1946 as Water Tender 1st Class.
In September 1945 he received a letter of Commendation from his Commanding
Officer, for outstanding performance of his duties in boiler repair and
operation on a combatant escort aircraft carrier.
He participated in the Marianas operation; the Western Carolines operation;
the Leyte and Luxon operations including the South China Sea; The Okinawa Gunto
operations including assaults on Sakishima Gunto, and with the North Pacific
Forces in the occupations of Northern Honshu and Hokkaido, Empire of Japan.
He helped to decommission this ship in Boston, Massachusetts. After a 30
dy leave he was sent to Florida, where he was discharged from the Naval Air
Advanced Training Command Flag Unit in Jacksonville, Flor. on Aug 28, 1946.
He returned home to Dayton, Oregon. He and his family lived ona 7 acre farm
5 miles South of Dayton for 18 years. Three years each in McMinnville and
Silverton, then moving to Woodburn March 1971. They lived here for 15 years
then in July 1986, moved to Salem, Oregon.
Jess retired after 30 years with the Oregon Department of Transportation,
with his wife, Betty, 3 children, 7 grand children, and 3 great-grandchildren.
Betty retired in Nov 1988 after 28 years with State Farm Insurance Company as
an auto Underwriter.
For ten years Jess was a Square Dance Caller, and worked with the 4-H Teens
several years. He had belonged to the Silverton and Woodburn Elks and was a
member of the Salem Veterans of Foreign Wars. He loved to travel and visit
this beautiful country of ours.
After a short illness Jess passed away May 4, 1992 at the local Salem
