Mary Constance Philabert, orphan daughter of Gabriel Philabert of Canada. The Philaberts were a family of French extraction who moved to St. Louis in 1816. At the death of her parents Mary Constance was reared by her uncle, Joseph Philabert, and her brothers, Gabriel, John, Joseph, Frank and Peter, were placed at trades. The brother Gabriel was afterwards Government Blacksmith for the Kaw and Osage Indians, and was stationed in Kansas Territory near the mouth of the Kaw. (a)
