From Obituary
J. Rufus HiattMrs. J. Rufas Hiatt of Clinton, N. C., one of the most prominent and wealthy business men of eastern Carolina, died at the Johnson-Wills Sanatorium, at Richmond, VA., on the night of December 5, 1910, where he had gone to be treated for general break own of health resulting from a complication of diseases. he had been in declining heatlh for about two yeasr, and had t raveled a good deal and been treaeted by several of the ost eminent physiciansin the united States' but to no avail.
His remains were taken to Greensboro, his former home, and remained in the home of his sister, Mrs. Lamb, until the morning of the 8th Inst when htey were taken to Guilford College for vurial in the Guilford College cemetery. The funeral was conducted in the Friends Church aqt GUilford College by his lifetong friend, Rev. E. C. Glenn of the Methodist denomination of FGreensboro, Rev. Alvert Peel of the Friends chruch of Guilford College and Rev. SHuford Peeler of teh German Reformed Church of Freensboro.
The active pall-bearers wre his brothers and brother-in-law, viz: Messrs. R. G., E. P., N. A. and Charles Hiatt and J. I. Fountain and S.G. Blalock. The honroary pall bearers were Messrs. C. L. Bevil of Fayetteveille, N. C., Nell Vanstory and Cary Johnson of Greensboro, J. E. Fowler and W.J. Pugh of Clinton, N. C. and Dr. Lockhart of Ashboro, N. C.
A good many visitors from different parts of this State and from South Carolina attended the funeral, for he was widely and favorably known and had a large circle of personal and business friends. He was a native of Guilford county, later movign to fayetteville, n. C. where he was promient in social and business circles until 1898 when he moved to Clinton, N. C. and engaged in the livestock stock exchange business. He was known as one of the best and most reliable horsemen in eastern north Carolina.
He leaves a wife and one child. Dr. H. B. Hiatt, a prominent physician of Ashboro, N. C. His wife and son were both with him when the end came. His wife had been constantly with him since his heatlh began to decline, nearly two years ago, and for the past several months his son had given nearly his entire attention to trying to restore his father to health and had taken him to specialists in Philidelphia and Richmond. we do not recall an instance of more sincere devotion and loving attention shown to any person then was shown to this good man by his faithful and competent wife, and able and skilled son.
Mr. Hatt was very popular in this part of the state. He deserved to be popular for he was easily one of the most public spirited, purest and best men we ever knew. The fifty-three years he spent upon this earth were marked with good for his fellowmen. A good man has gone, and his going has left sadness and sorrow in his town and section of North carolina A FRIEND

14 Feb 2011 by mail story with pictures of familiesof pictures of house: This is the home of HIlary and Mary Eugenia on 323 East Lee st. Greensboro, NC. It caught fire in the dead of winter while they were sleeping. They awoke, everyone scrambled for safety, my aunt Edith and Uncle Tom jumped from an upstairs window, Hilary, slept downstairs and was near the front door, grabbed his hat, pulled on an overcoat over his nihgt shirt, grabbed the family bible and came out the door, since most of the Hiatt's lived on the same street, they had ran to help, when Hilary turned to look at the house someone saw his whole back side was on fire! But only the coat suffered damage, the bible was scorched on the outside and some smoked pages on the edges, this is the bible I have now. Donna Galan
