Had three Children by his first wife (last name Suggs). Had a number of children by second wife. Sons' names included Benjamin, John, Elihu, James, Daughter Mehalia. Phillip is thought to be a brother to James and Elihu who moved from Rowan to Burke to Buncombe to Haywood in 1790s. John, Phillip's son, married Nancy WELCH after the family moved to Macon co. NC. One of John's sons Erwin Huston Chambers married Lucinda Worley in Swain Co. Their son was Henry Chambers who married Laura Parsons. One of their children is my Great Aunt Kathleen Chambers Ford, age 82, who is still living in Clay Co., NC. Her two sons Larry Ford and Gene Ford are also there. Can you assist with any family info?

Forum URL: http://genforum.genealogy.com/staton/Just a reminder: many records for STATONS turn out to be SLATONS and vice versa. Enumerators and clerks swept the crossing of the tee in "ton" or "ten" right over the second letter, be it ell or tee. Conversely, the intentional crossing may have faded over the years and left an ell that was meant to be a tee.
Some examples: a known Littleton Gaines Staton and Gaines Slaton, both in N GA; Willis Staton and Willis Slaten, Fleming Staton and Fleming Slaton, Wilshire Stayton and Wilcher Slayton; I could go on and on.
I have Rev John's book, flawed though it may be, and a database (17,400) of SLATON (and variations) census records. When I discover a STATON in the woodpile I usually make note of this to avoid future confusion. The biggest minefields are Hall co GA and Sand Mountain in AL, where SLATONS and STATONS abound. This is further compounded in W KY were there are STALLIONS, STALLINGS, and SLATTINS (in records).
If you come across something that just doesn't look right in your research, drop me a mail at cslayton@bellsouth.net. Maybe you are looking at a Slaton. Perhaps not, but it never hurts to see if there is evidence that the name you are looking at shows up in my research as a Slaton. I may need to rethink my records as well.
Children who cannot correct such notations (in orphanages or foster families) may in fact have unknowingly become "adopted" by name-change into a different line altogether.
Have not yet found a Slaton-Staton marriage, but give it time. There probably is one in N AL, where both family lines live in the Guntersville area. There is a connection with both families to the ELROD name, if I recall. This traces back to SC settlements, but the families settled in NE GA and N AL.
