Luther Powell (Wilson) GILLESPIE
Ida Lambert Johnson, daughter of Minnie Lee Gillespie Lambert, tells a touching story of how much Luther Powell loved his great-grandfather Wilson Laffoon, who d when Luther was five. The little boy would sit on the little fence around his grandfather's grave for hours at a time.. He later changed his name from Luther "Powell" to Luther "Wilson" Gillespie.
Wilson was the last of the name to live on the ancestral land which the Gillespie children later inherited from Wilson.. Luther continued to live on it until after he lost his only child in WWII. He sold the land and it went out of Laffoon descendant's hands nearly two-hundred years after the first Laffoon settled on Fisher River in Surry.
