Mary Theodocia HALBERT

Mary Theodocia, was born in South Carolina, in 1812. In 1828, she married Reuben Davis of Mississippi, a young man who was just entering the legal profession. They lived at Aberdeen on the Tombigbee River. He became an eminent lawyer in those early days in Mississippi. As early as 1835, he was elected district attorney of the Northeast Mississippi District which included what is now Pontotoc, Tippah, Monroe, and other counties. Later, he served as a member of Congress from Mississippi, and after secession he served in the Congress of the Confederate States. Their beautiful ante bellum mansion, built in 1847, is one of the finest old homes in Aberdeen. Mississippi, today. He was the author of the book, Recollections of Mississippi and Mississippian; which was published in 1890. It is an excellent source of history for this important period of the state.
