MICHAEL GUTHRIE

farmer, section 35, post office Braddyville, Iowa, was born in Pike County, Ohio, March 5, 1811, and was reared on a farm, there being principally educated.  In 1827, he moved to Vermilion County, Illinois.  After making his home there until about the year 1854, he came to (Big Spring Township no longer exists) Wayne County, Iowa and in 1855, settled in his present location.  While in Illinois he learned the cooper's trade, which he followed for about ten years.  With this exception, he has been engaged in farming during life, and now owns a farm of 209 acres.  During the Black Hawk war, Mr. G. served for two months.  He was married November 3, 1836, to Miss Elizabeth Osborn.  She was born in Adams County, Ohio, October 20, 1819.  When about ten years of age, her parents moved to Kentucky, and one year later to Vermillion County, Indiana, where she was married.  They have had twelve children, seven of whom are now living: William, Samuel, Melissa, Maria, Nancy, Emma, and Perry.

ALSO:  Michael Guthrie was born in Pike County, Ohio, March 5, 1811, and in 1827 removed to Vermillion County, Indiana, where he resided for eighteen months.  He then located in Vermilion County, Illinois, at Danville, and after making his home there until 1854, he went to Wayne County, Iowa, but the following year removed to a farm in Nodaway County, Missouri.

NODAWAY COUNTY MISSOURI WILL OF MICHAEL GUTHRIE 1890

I Michael Guthry of the County of Nodaway and state of Missouri do make and publish this my last will and testament.
FIRST I desire all my debts paid.
SECOND I give and bequeath to my eldest son William Guthry twenty five (25) acres of land off the South side of the West half of the South West quarter of section thirty-six (36) in township sixty-seven (67) of range thirty-seven (37) lying and being in Nodaway County and State of Missouri in full for his share of my estate to hold the same to him, his heirs and assigns forever.
THIRD I give and bequeath to my youngest daughter Emiline Lamme wife of Milton Lamme twenty five acres (25) of land described as follows commencing at the South West corner of South West half of southwest quarter of section thirty-six (36) township sixty seven (67) Range thirty seven (37) thence running North fifty rods to place of beginning thence east eighty rods thence North fifty rods thence West eighty rods thence South fifty rods to place of beginning lying and being in Nodaway County and State of Missouri in full of her share of my estate to hold the same to her and her heirs and assigns forever.
FOURTH I give and bequeath to my daughter Mariah Baxter wife of Uriah Baxter thirty acres (30) of land off the North Side of the West half of the Southwest quarter of section thirty six (36) in Township sixty seven (67) of Range thirty seven (37) lying and being in the County of Nodaway and State of Missouri in full of her share of my estate to hold the same to her and her heirs and assigns forever.
FIFTH I give and bequeath to my daughter Milisse E Guthry forty five and one fourth acres of land described as follows commencing at South East corner of the East half of the South East quarter of section thirty five (35) in Township sixty seven (67) of Range thirty seven (37) thence running north ninety two (92) rods thence west seventy (70) rods thence south (12) rods thence west (10) rods thence South Eighty (80) rods thence East Eighty rods to place of beginning lying and being in the County of Nodaway and State of Missouri in full for her share of my estate except one hundred dollars is to be paid out of the above described estate by Milisse E Guthry to Nancy Russell wife of Edward Russell after the one hundred dollars is paid as above described there to hold the same for her and her heirs and assigns forever.
SIXTH I give and bequeath to my youngest son Perry Guthry the Ten (10) acres of land of the north west quarter of the South East quarter and also thirty four and three fourths (34 3/4) acres of land described as follows commencing at the North East corner of the South East quarter of section thirty five (35) township sixty seven (67) of Range thirty seven (37) thence running south sixty eight (68) rods thence West seventy (70) rods thence South twelve (12) rods thence West ten(10 rods thence North Eighty (80) rods thence East eighty (80) rods to place of beginning all the above described land being and lying in section thirty five (35) township sixty seven(67) Range thirty seven(37) in the County of Nodaway and State of Missouri in full for his share of my estate to hold the same to him his heirs and assigns forever,
SEVENTH I give and bequeath to my son Samuel Guthry the East ten (10) acres of land of the South West quarter of the South East quarter of section thirty five (35) in township sixty seven (67) of Range thirty seven (37) being and lying in the County of Nodaway and State Missouri in full for his share of my estate to hold the same to him his heirs and assigns forever.
EIGHTH I give and bequeath to my daughter Nancy Russell wife of Edward Russell twenty nine (29) acres of land the remainder of my land that I have lying in the West half of the South East quarter of section thirty five (35) township sixty seven Range thirty seven (37) in the County of Nodaway and State of Missouri in full for her share of my estate to hold the same to her and her heirs and assigns forever.
NINTH I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Elizabeth all of my personal property including household and kitchen furniture money notes etc and also the proceeds of the farm to have and to hold to her own separate use and benefit during her natural life.
TENTH I give and bequeath to the Children of my deceased daughter Mary Jane Carr one dollar each to be paid by my executor
ELEVENTH I hereby appoint my son Perry Guthry my sole executor of this my last will and testament hereby authorising him to set apart to each one his or hers tract of land as I have willed to them and to sell all the personal property collect all dues and pay all debts and divide the remainder equal with all my children at such time after the death of my wife as he may think proper.  In witness whereof I have herewith set my hand this the 30th day of April 1884.

Be it remembered, that on this the 22nd day ot September A.D. 1890 before me James B. Newman Judge of the Probate Court held in and for the County and State aforesaid personally appeared T.B. Blackford and J. G. Williams who are the subscribing witnesses to the annexed Will of Michael Guthry deceased and being by me first duly sworn depose and say that the said Michael Guthry the testator subscribed the same in their presence and published and declared said will or instrument of writing to be his last will and testament and that at the time of signing the same be the said testator, was of sound and disposing mind and more than twenty one years of age, and that said deponents attested said will as witnesses thereto by subscribing their names to the same in the presence of the testator and of each other and at the request of the said testator.

Michael Guthery buys land from John Osborn, Vermilion Cty., Illinois

Land was registered near Big Springs, Wayne County, Iowa for both Michael and William Guthrie in the year or so that the Michael and Elizabeth Osborne Guthrie family lived there. Big Springs is no longer in existence. Big Springs had a post office from 1875 to 1901.
