John Hamil GUTHERY

He attended the old Parr Town school near his home and Ohio Normal (now Northern) University and also Business School at Danville.  He taught school for nine winters.  From 1882 to 1904 he farmed some seven hundred acres in Big Island Township, (the Ross Farm).  In 1904 he bought the four hundred acre farm north of LaRue, the homestead founded by his mother's father, John Frederick, where he lived until 1918.  From this time until his death, April 1, 1947, he lived in Marion, Ohio, and was engaged in selling for the Ohio State Life Insurance Company; at the same time taking an active interest in his farm, operated by his son Cyril.  He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Compbell National Bank in LaRue.  He was a member of the Presbyterian Church of LaRue, Ohio and belonged to the Knights of Pythias.

HISTORY OF MARION COUNTY, OHIO BIOGRAPHICAL
J. H. Guthrie (Big Island Township) is a stirring, vigorous young man, of only eighteen summers; was born 30 June 1865 the son of John D. and Susan Guthrie, of Bowling Green Township. He has been prosecuting his studies at the Ada and Danville Normal Schools, but this spring (1883) he has been conducting the "Longacre Farm," owned by his father, and consisting of 126 acres. On this farm are twenty-five acres of wheat, seventy-five acres of corn and good live stock. In all probability Mr. Guthrie will make this his permanent residence. The farm arm is supplied with good stock.
