(Purcell) Armstrong, 98, died Tuesday at the Rice County District Hospital after a long illness. Born July 4, 1873, in Ohio, she was married to Thomas Armstrong Feb. 1911, in Rice County. He died Feb. 14, 1940. She was a lifelong resident of Rice County. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Lyons, and the Rebeckah Lodge. There are no immediate survivors. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the Lyons Cemetery; Rev. Dorothy BIRT

Birth: Jan. 30, 1912 Death: Jan. 6, 2009 Dorothy (Birt) Sturgeon Dorothy Sturgeon, 96, of Kansas City, MO, formerly of Edgerton, MO, passed away, Tuesday, January 6, 2009. She was born on January 30, 1912 to Clyde C. and Grace Pearl (McWilliams) Birt in Edgerton, Missouri where she grew up and graduated high school. She then attended Stephens College in Columbia, MO. Dorothy later attended the University of Kansas where she received her Bachelor of Arts in Spanish in 1934. On April 12, 1942 she was united in marriage to Robert Earl Sturgeon. After her husband served in WWII, they made their home in Edgerton. Her husband, Robert, passed away in 1960, and in 1977 Dorothy moved to Kansas City, Missouri. Dorothy was a teacher in Weston, Missouri, and retired from the North Platte School District. She was a member of the Edgerton Christian Church, and later the Country Club Christian Church in Kansas City where she was a member of the 50-50 Sunday School Class. Dorothy was also a member of the Gamma Phi Beta Sorority where she served as past president of the Kansas City Alumni Chapter, the Kansas City Athenaeum, the Kansas City Women's Commission, and Missouri Girls Town Board. Dorothy truly enjoyed traveling, visiting every continent but Australia and loved watching her KU Jayhawks. Dorothy was also preceded in death by her parents, and her sister, Elizabeth Shewey. She is survived by her son, Robert Sturgeon and wife, Linda, Lawrence, KS; granddaughter, Jennifer Gilliland and husband, Cody, Denver, CO; great-grandson, Jackson Robert; niece, Dorothy Tucker and husband, Charlie, Boulder, CO; other relatives, and many friends. Visitation: 1:00-2:00 p.m. Friday, January 9th at the Hixson-Klein Funeral Home, Edgerton with Graveside Service to follow at Memorial Park Cemetery in St. Joseph. Memorial Service: 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 10th at the Combs Chapel at Country Club Christian Church, 6101 Ward Parkway, Kansas City, MO. Donations may be made to Missouri Girls Town, The Kansas City Athenaeum or Crossroads Hospice.
