James M. HIATT

(1066.)  to (1071.)  No further record.

   Received a letter this date, 20 Mar 1992, from Earl M. Rice, 4685 N.W. 53
Ct., Des Moines, Ia.  50310.  He writes that he is retired at 62 years of age
and has been doing research on his family for a year and a half.  He had heard of our work thru the Genealogical Society at Des Moines and found a notice of marriage of his grandparents, Joseph and Bethia Bailes Hiatt, Jan 19, 1830 in Henry Co., Ind., in our newsletters.
He drew a Civil War pension of $70 per month for a disability.  He suffered from a loss of voice, could not talk above a whisper due to something he aquired in the service.  I have to sit down and read in more depth the papers, something that is not easy since they are all hand written.
James M. was a Quaker Preacher and was very strict.

Department of Iowa Grant Army of the Republic
When a young man he removed with his father's family to Poweshiek Co.,
Iowa.  By trade he was a blacksmith and a farmer.  In 1862 with three brothers he enlisted in Co B 40th Regt Iowa Inf commanded by COl. John A. Garrett who formerly served in the Mexicn War and was a competent officer.  After the war he returned to his home. He first married Emeline Collyer, with whom he lived until the year 1870 when they were divorced.  He then married Amanda E. Gomerin the year 1871 res. in Mahaska Co.  He was the father of ten chilren, six of whom survive.  Mrs. Hiatt passed away in March 1922.  Has for some time resided with his children in Des Moines.

Life Story of Margaret Rebecca Hiatt Blatter
I was born down in Harrisville, Weber, Utah 7 Jan 1880, my parents were
Reuben Hiatt and Amanda Jane Rawson.  We lived in the place where I was born
until I was two years old.  Then on 1 Dec 1881, my sister, Ellen was born.  In 1882, I moved with my parents to Pleasant Valley and father worked there is a saw mill that summer, then, that winter, they moved in Uncle Jim Taylor's house and my little sister, Mary Jane was born 24 Dec.
I was about four and a half years old when we left Utah and moved to Egin Beach.  Father homesteaded one hundred and sixty acres of land there and while they were building a house there, we lived in John Fisher's place.  There was no floor in the house, just the bare ground.
We lived there all summer and then moved into our new house for the winter.
While we were living at the Fisher place, my sisters and I were in the
house while mother was outside washing.  We locked ourselves in the house and
couldn't get out and mother had quite a time making us understand how to unlock the door.
When I was eight years old, I was baptized 5 July 1888 in Egin by William
Rawson and was confirmed the same day by Robert Greenwood.
We went to school in the meeting house.  My first teachers name was Lena
Moon.  We didn't have any readers then, we just read from charts.  I didn't go to school only to the fifth grade.  Father was Bishop then, the ward was
divided.
It was called West Egin and we only had just a Sunday School, then after
two or three years they organized a ward, it was called the Hiatt Sunday School and they had Sunday School and Primary.  They had it that way for a while, and then organized a Ward and it was called Plano.  We lived there for a while until 1902, then I moved with my parents to Nibley, Oregon.
Then I met Andors C. Blatter and on 21 Jan 1903, we were married.  We built us a house on a lot in Nibley and lived there until 1904.  I went with Andors to Baker City, Oregon to haul lumber, then in 1906, we moved to Union, Oregon.  We lived in town a month, then we moved up in the canyon on Dathryn Creek, on my brother-in-laws place.
Then in November, Andors went on a mission to the Central States.  When he came back from his mission, we stayed on that place until 1910, then we moved in a wagon to Idaho.
We stopped at Rupert, Idaho and worked for Mr. Norby for a month, then we left there and came to Idaho Falls.  We arrived in Idaho Falls on 18 June 1910.   That fall, we moved to Grandpa Blatter's place.  We farmed John Blatter's place the next year.  After that, we farmed Grandpa Blatter's place a year or two, then we bought the dry farm.
In 1915 our daughter Inez was born, in 1917 we sold our dry farm and bought us a place on the foot hills, where our other three children were born.
We sold our place on the foot hills now and are going to move to Chinook,
Blaine, Mont.
