She was born Susannah Adcock 8 Jun 1819, Randolph Co., Ind, was renamed Emry along with the other members of the family, and in 1838 moved with her parents to the new Quaker settlement which became Salem, Henry Co., Ia. Here, on 1 May 1839 she was married to Thomas Hockett.

Company, Chicago, 1888, describes the emigration & settlement of Quakers, on pages 683-684. In the fall of 1836,
several Friends of Cherry Grove Monthly Meeting, Ind organized an exploration party which visited the Salem area. The
party consisted of Reuban Joy, William Hammer, Dr. Gideon Frazier, (Susanna's uncle), Stephen, John & Nathan Hockett
(Two brothers & an Uncle of Thomas). The first wagon train made the trip in May & June 1837, & consisted of Reuben,
Henry & Abram Joy, Thomas Cook, Levi Cammock & Dr. Gideon, Stephen, Thomas & Lydia Frazier (an uncle, 2 first
cousins, & widowed aunt of Susanna). The second wagon train arrived 4 weeks later, composed of Stephen Hockett, Sr.,
Stephen Hockett, Jr., John Hockett & Harrison Hoggatt (Grandfather, two uncles of Thomas) ... [unreadable text on copy]

Thomas J. Hockett was 18, and living in Jefferson Co., Iowa, when he enlisted as a Private in Co. G of the 4th Iowa Cavalry on Jan 3, 1865. He was mustered into federal service on the same day. On July 2, 1865, he was accidentally wounded by a gunshot, and sent to the hospital. He was mustered out on Company rolls on Aug. 8, 1865, as "absent in hospital at Edgefield, Tenn." His actual discharge was given Oct. 1, 1865, at Davenport, Iowa. From Tombstone in Hardman, Morrow Co., Oregon Cemetery. Approximately 1/4 mile from SW corner of existing (1994) town center. Visable on hillside. Gate over cemetery reads 1882. Rachel Emry's grave is in the center of the cemetery and is surrounded by an ornate fence. The tombstone is shared by her husband, Dillon Hoskins. She died on 24 Mar 1901 in Hardman, Morrow Co., Oregon.OBITUARY:
"Rachel Hoskins nee Emry was born in Randolph County, Ind, Jan 28, 1823 and died near Hardman, Oregon, March 24, 1901, aged 78 years, 1 month and 24 days. She was married to Dillon Hoskins Aug 14, 1839, in Henry Co., Iowa. They crossed the plains with ox teams in 1852 and settled in Linn Co., Oregon, and moved to Morrow Co., Oregon in 1876. She was the mother of sixteen children of whom eleven are living, four dying in infancy, and her oldest son James dying in 1892. Her living decendents include eleven children, fifty-four grand-children and forty great grand-children. The total number of her decendants are one hundred and thirty-two of who one hundred and five are living.She had a birthright in the Quaker Church, joined the M.E. Church but was Radical U.B. in belief. Her influence was strongly against secrecy and intemperance. She led a quiet, unassuming life, but many will remember her testimony to the saving power of Jesus. Her death was triumphant, she was calling the names of loved ones as she neared the heavenly shore. Among her descendants are three U.B. Ministers, a son, daughter and grandson."
