John Eslinger MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. - John Eslinger of Morehead City died on Thursday, Aug. 10, 2006. Eslinger, 76, is survived by his wife Mary Vann; a daughter Laura and her husband Ralph Smith of Boone, and a sister Marylin Greene and her husband James of Tunnel Hill. Eslinger, a 10-year Navy veteran, was a graduate of the University of Missouri School of Journalism. As reporter, editorial writer and editor he worked for the Charlotte Observer, the Baltimore Sun, the Winston-Salem Journal-Sentinel, the Durham Morning Herald, and the Fayetteville Observer. He was the first director of the North Carolina Center for Public Policy Research.In retirement Eslinger learned to sail a small boat and pilot a small plane. He volunteered at the North Carolina Coastal Federation and the North Carolina Maritime Museum. A memorial service will be Sept. 10 at 3 p.m. at the Unitarian Coastal Fellowship in Morehead City. Memorial contributions may be made to the North Carolina Coastal Federation, 3609 Highway 24 (Ocean), Newport, NC 28570; the Unitarian Coastal Fellowship, 1300 Evans St., Morehead City, NC 28557; or the School of Journalism at the University of Missouri, 103 Neff Hall, Columbia, MO 65211.
