Asa HIETT Colonel

  Birth found in Early Births Western Frederick Co., Va and Eastern Hampshire Co., West Va. compiled by Grace Kelso Garner and Ralph L. Triplett 1976.
   Asa and Charlotte had no children
   Capon Valley 1698 to 1940 by Maud Pugh.

   Asa was known as Colonel Asa, He grew up on the farm and attended school at the old school house in Sandy Ridge.
   He was a master of figurative illustrations in speaking and could "Give to airy nothings a local habitation and a name".
   With his ability to tell funny stories he attracted people about him wherever he went and was well known and popular in the county.
   He was Colonel of Militia before the Civil War and in 1877 was elected to the House of Delegates during 1845-49, and 1855-56, a total of four terms.
   Mr. Hiett owned a farm near North River Mills and a grocery store in the village in sight of the lower mill at one time.

b. c1812; d. 1885; m. (after 1850)., to CHARLOTTE ARNOLD; no children.

His obituary was written in Hampshire Co., Va., by C. N. Hiett, now deceased: Col. Asa Hiett was in Va. legislature and represented this county before the Civil War -- also represented the county in W. Va. was organized and the capitol was at Wheeling. He was a member of the 2nd Constitutional Convention which was organized to adopt a new constitution, and contracted a cold while there and had to leave. He came back and died at the home of J. M. Cowgill, his sister's son.

Historical Notes:

(1) Charlotte Arnold Hiett is buried in the Sloan Family Graveyard, west of     Romney West Virginia, across highway U.S. Route 50, from the historic "Stone     House."

  Hiett, Charlotte (nee Arnold), was born on Oct. 4, 1828 and died on Aug. 25, 1852. She married Asa Hiett, son of Jeremiah and Lucinda (Kidwell) Hiett. They had no children. Charlotte was buried in the Richard Sloan graveyard, near the "Stone House," on U.S. Route 50, west of Romney, W.Va. Source: Tombstone inscription.
