Entered service 4 May 1861..made corporal in May 1862. Killed at Hanover Court House, VA 27 May 1862... His brother, James ansome Key, was killed the same day in the same battle.

Owned land on one side of Stuarts' Creek and Dudleys on the other side. Part of the Dudley land was sold to the famous Siamese Twins, Eng and Chang Bunker. Some of the land is still owned by Herring-Dudley descendants. The Dudley-Herring Cemetery Is "Just across the woods form their home"....When it located (in a cow pasture) there were only 3 graves found, two readable as follows: Robesrt D Herring was born May 1, 1836 d. Sept. 11, 1867... Harden G. Herring was born 1792 d. Sept. 18, 1870.
Volunteered 20 May 1861...He died 6 Sep 1861 at Thoroughfare, VA of typhoid fever. Family records show his death date on 11 Sep 1861. There is a tombstone for him in the Dudley-Herring Cemetery located in the Gentry School area of Sury. It is thought that his family brought the body home for burial.
