Did his childhood schooling by the light from the fireplace because the family was so poor....He taught school in Surry Co. for 33 years and walked an average of six miles a day during that time. He never drove a car and depended upon his physical weel being to get where he was going. He taught school in Westfield, Long Hill, Pilot Mountain, and Mt. Airy townships. Some of those schools being: the Old Quarry, Cooke, Sheltontown, Wooville(Old Gordon School near Ararat), Taylor, and Bannertown (a one teacher school called Oark Grove).
