Notes

John FOSTER

It is stated that John Foster being born abt <1437>.  I didn't enter this for obvious reasons.
I put his birth date as abt. 1385.  (Donna Hiatt)

Elizabeth DE ORDE

Elizabeth DeORDE was listed as born about <1439>, but I didn't put this down.  I entered it as 1385, instead.  (Donna Hiatt)

William ELMEDON

I entered William and Elizabeth's marriage as 1408, instead of 1411, to make it cime out right.  (Donna Hiatt)  William was also known as Sir Knight.

Elizabeth DE UMBREVILLE

This line of Elizabeth De UMFREVILLE is a King's line!

Simon DE ORDE

Simon's birth date was entered as <1413>, but I left it blank.  (Donna Hiatt)

Thomas DE ELMEDON

On the pedigree, it was stated that Thomas was born in Elmedon, D., England.  I thought this was a typo, and corrected it.

Leroy Arvin "Roy" SHIELDS

Was in the navy and stayed along the East Coast.  Jan 16, 2003.

Cancer of the Larnex took Roy's voice sometime after he left the service and before he moved to Wilson, NC.  It later came back, and Roy decided to take his own life with a 45 caliber pistol rather than suffer a lingering period of dependency on others.

Roy retired from the US Navy as a Radioman Chief (RMC).

                                                                                         His obiturary reads:

Leroy Arvin Shields died at his home in Wilson, North Carolina during the night of 24 April.  Leroy, born 1 August 1925 on the family farm near Massena, Iowa, was 79 years old.  He had been in ill health for some time.  Leroy, known as Roy or Smoky to friends and family, enlisted in the Navy in 1943 and served in the Pacific Theater during World War II.  He went on to make a career of the Navy before retiring to Norfolk, Virginia with his wife Ella.  After her death in 1999, Leroy moved to Wilson.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Ella; father and mother, William and Bertha Shields; sisters Clara Fulks, Opal Hyndman, Pearl Mandry, and Arlene Heppert; and brothers James, Paul, Ray and Orval Shields.  He is survived by a stepdaughter Peggy Raper and her family; a brother Glenn; and a sister, Ruby Ruby.

Roy, known as "Smoky" to close friends and family, suffered from a recurrence of cancer and failed eyesight.  Not wanting to be a burden to anyone, and not wanting to live in an assisted care facility, he chose to take his own life.  His stepdaughter, Peggy Raper, found him the morning of 25 April.  She was to take him to Duke for an eye checkup.  His obituary:

2  _PRIM Y

A letter from the Commanding Officer of the ship on which the ceremony was conducted reads:
                                                                             September 23, 2005
Dear Ms. Raper,

A burial at sea ceremony was conducted on behalf of your late step father, Leroy Arvin Shields on Friday, September 23, 2005 aboard USS LEYTE GULF (CG 55) while off the coast of Virginia at 36°37.4N, 074°42.8W.

Conforming to naval tradition, the ship was stopped and the colors were lowered to half-mast.  The morning was cool, with little wind and calm seas.  Under these favorable conditions, the ceremony was conducted with dignity and solemnity.  The ship's Chaplain, Lieutenant M.R. Baker, officiated the ceremony.  The Command Master Chief, D.B. Duffy, conducted the committal to the sea.  Ensign M.J.Beer, leading our Honor Platoon rendered full military honors and I accepted our nation's flag on behalf of your husband's service to this country.

Please accept the enclosed flag, DVD, burial chart and three shell casing representing the Honor, Courage and Commitment your step father showed forth in service to his country.  May these serve as a reminder of the ceremony that hopefully will have special meaning for you in times of reflection.  The officers and crew of LEYTE GULF are proud and honored to have shared in such an event for one who served his country with distinction.

Sincerely

signed

M.J. TURNER
