Theophile "Tom" Lucier had a stormy marriage with Amy Wood. Both had tempers and both were "right". Amy had to learn to speak the French language, because Tom's mother refused to learn English. January and Phyllis traveled to the Beauvais area in Alberta, Canada several times when work was lean in Montana. Tom and Amy went with them, taking the children with them. The men would then work in the mines up there, because this is what they when living in Ontario, Canada, to supplement their farming, before immigrating to the United States in 1884.
Amy gave birth to her 3 children at home, alone most times. This had to be a frightening ordeal for a 16 year old girl. Her 2 sons, Henry and Felix, were close to 14 pounds at birth, and her daughter Pearl, a little less, at 11 lbs. (She was a 7 month baby!) Tom would always manage to be elsewhere when the babies arrived.
Then one day, when Tom was driving the powder wagon to the to the mines, he didn't return home. His brothers' found bits and pieces ot the wagon and mules, and just assumed that Tom was killed in the blast. Amy managed to raise her children by herself. She left Frenchtown, Montana and moved to Seattle, Washington. They lived for a while in the San Francisco area, too. She worked at menial labor and eventually moved her family to Selah, Washington.
Pearl married James Henry Griffin and had a baby boy, but the marriage didn't work out. Her brother, Henry, worked hard to be the man of the family at the age of 18. After Pearl married Vern Leedom, she let her ex-husband take the boy, Billy, and raise him. She and Vern had a baby girl, Lillian. This marriage didn't work out and Pearl moved home, again. She met and married a local batchelor in 1931, to whom she stayed married to for 49 years. Henry didn't get married until he was past the age of 28 and knew that his mother and sister were both married and well taken care of.
He said he felt that his father was still alive, so he insisted that Amy file for divorce, just in case, so her marriage to John Carlson would be legal. Henry was a stickler for legality and honesty.
Then, Henry married a young girl from Selah, Sarah Shelly, and they moved in with Amy and J.P. Carlson for 2 1/2 months at their Yakima residence. Then they moved to Selah, where their first child was born. Sarah's father passed away in 1935, and Donald was 6 months old and could travel, so they moved south, to Oregon. (Most of the roads were dirt roads.)
Henry said that whenever he took a trip, he'd check the phonebooks along the way, in the larger towns, for the name LUCIER. He never thought to look in the Eugene phonebook. It wasn't all that big of a town. (There was a sign on a business which stated Lucier's Coal Yard!...... on the main street of Eugene! DUH!)
Many years later, Henry's brother, Felix, happened to be having a beer in a bar in Lyons, Oregon. He lived behind the tavern, with his wife, Addie. They enjoyed tippling a few, now and then. Felix was laughing at something that someone had said. Shortly thereafter, the bartender came over to him and introduced himself as Roy Steele. He said that the only other man who laughed like that was his brother's late father-in-law. Roy said the hair on the back of his neck had stood on end, when he heard Felix laugh......... So, he asked what the man's name was and when Felix told him, they were in for the shock of their lives.
"Felix LUCIER? You'll never believe this, but Chuck's father-in-law's name was Tom Lucier. He passed away 13 years ago. Could he be related to you?", Roy replied.
"My father's name was Theophile Lucier." Felix replied, " He was called Tom.........."
They had a long talk and eventually decided that Roy's brother,Chuck, was the son-in-law of a man called Tom Lucier, and Felix's Father. Tom had married a second time, after he disappeared in Montana. He had moved to Falls City, Washington, where he met the Parker and Runkle families, and married Doris Rebecca Parker. The second family had never been told about the first marriage and family. Out of all of Tom's sibling's, the only ones that his current family were aware of, were the names of his parents and a sister, Celina. It was probably best that Tom had passed on and he never knew that he'd been "found". He and Doris had 2 daughters and a happy life. Chuck's wife, Pearl Rebecca was his 2nd daughter. (Tom must have liked the name Pearl!) The oldest was Elsie. Their mother, Doris, had passed away giving birth to Shirley, the 3rd daughter, in 1934. Tom was a widow for 9 1/2 years before he died, on 11 September 1946.
Felix's niece, Donna, was doing genealogy on her family and after finding a few records, was able to confirm that Tom had a second family. She stopped at Eugene, with her parents, and visited Pearl. They remained friends and kept in touch over the years, until Pearl's death on 2 Dec. 2000, at Eugene, Lane, OR.
Tom Lucier was buried on 16 September 1946, in the Laurel Hill Cemetery at Eugene, Oregon, by his wife Doris. He died at the age of 73 years. He had told his 2nd family that his birthday was on 26 Aug 1873 and that he had been born in Frenchtown, Montana. After reading the Catholic Church records of Paincourt, Kent, Ontario, Canada, it was proven that he was born on 27 Sept. 1876, near there, in Chatham, Ontario, Canada. His family didn't immigrate to the United States until 1884.
Grandpa Tom never knew of his grandchildren, by his first family. It was sad that they never got to know him. They are glad that they have the story to pass on to their descendants. They are proud to be his grandchildren.
Submitter's are Donna Lucier Hiatt & Shirley Ann Heudier who were working on this line, in 1963, but has lost contact with each other over the years.
Christy Hall Scheufele, who is Shirley Lucier Hall's daughter, began working on this line in 1995, when she lived at Myrtle Creek, Oregon. She and her husband Bill, moved to Powers, Oregon and then to Monument, Oregon. They keep in touch with Donna with E-Mail on their computers. She found a distant cousin in Ontario, Canada that gave us the name and e-mail of a Shirley Ann Beezley, who had been working on the Lucier/Lussier Line a few years back. (The same Shirley Heudier that Donna had been searching for? YES!!!)) We are thankful to have finally made contact with our missing cousin.
(P.S. Henry Lucier said that his father was born in Chatham, Ontario, Canada, south of Paincourt. That may be right, if the closest Catholic Church was at Paincourt.) Tom was christened on 29 Sep 1876, at Paincourt, Kent, Ontario, Canada. His sponsors were Luc Emery & Edesse Emery.

GIRL DISCOVERS FATHER DEAD"Thomas Henry Lucier, 129 East Broadway, was discovered dead in his room, Thursday at 10 P.M. by his daughter, Mrs. Pearl Steele, who had come to visit him.
The daughter found the door locked, but she could see her father lying on the bed, County Coroner Phil Bartholomew reported. She called city police who broke the lock. Time of death was set at sometime Wednesday night, and apparantly was from natural causes. An autopsy will be performed, however, Bartholomew said.
Survivors include two other daughters, Elsie Baker, of Klamath Falls and Shirley Runkle, Falls City, Wash., and six grandchildren.
Funeral announcements will be made by Poole-Larsen Mortuary."************************************************************

Amy was a tough ol' bird. She must have been, to live the life she did. Her grandchildren thought she didn't know their names, because she always called them "Kid". But, she knew, as they found out in their grown-up years.Amy was an excellent cook. She loved to cook with with garlic. She was known in the Selah area as the "Pickle Lady". They had a nice section in the Selah Cookbook that was dedicated to her.
Amy died of cardiac arrest, due to congestive heart failure, AJHD & GI hemorrhage of undetermined analogy.
Amy is buried at the Tahoma Cemetery, next to her 2nd husband, John Carlson.
