" Col. William D. Tipton, Baltimore's outstanding pilot of World War I. former commander of the Maryland National Guard Air unit and, since V-J Day commander of airlines of the 2nd Air Force, was killed instantly Wednesday (Dec., 12, 1945) in a plane accident 1 mile southeast of Adena, Ohio, according to a telegram received by his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Barrett Tipton, last night."
" The telegram was sent by Brig. Gen. J. K. Lacey, Comdt. 2nd Air Force, Colorado Springs, Colorado from June, 1944, to V-J Day Col. Tipton was Comdt. at Peterson Field, Colorado Springs," Sherriff Robert Bates, of Jefferson County, Ohio, said Col. Tipton's plane apparently exploded in the air and he either jumper or was thrown out. His body, with parachute unopen, was found about 500 feet from the wrecked plane.
Col. Tipton and a group of associates recently purchased the Curtis-Wright Corp. here last week, the priceof the airport, $1,050,000, when built in 1929-30, was said to be $240,000.
He entered the Army Air Service as a flying cadet in 1917, and attended ground school at Ohio State Uni., and later the School of Military Aeronautics at Oxford, England ... commisssioned 1st Lt. and assigned duty with the 3rd Squadron, Royal Air Force, in Franch until June 29, 1918... appointed flight commmander of the 17th U.S. Squadron in France and shot down several German planes. While flying over Cambrai on August 26, 1918, he was shot down by a German and taken prisoner.No children
