Educated at Carson Newman College and the Southern Babtist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky. was Pastor of the church at Elizabethton, Tennessee 1903- 1904.
   In April 1904, Rev. Tipton and wife were appointed as missionaries under the Foreign Misson Board of S. B. C. and sailed for  China on  Oct. 1, 1904 in which servive he has been for the past forty years.
    His wife died on Sep.20, 1907 at Wuchow, China.
    For the past twenty - seven years he has been editor of Sunday School literature in the China Babtist Publication Society.  In 1935 he received his degree of Doctor of Divinity, being exactly thirty- five years since he received his A. B. degree from the same institution Carson- Newman College.
