LAST RITES FOR R S TIPTON TO BE HELD FRIDAY
Funeral services will be held from Habing Funeral Chapel this Friday afternoon at two o'clock for Rice S. Tipton, 88. Dr. Carl Patton will officiate for the last rites for the well known educator and civic leader who passed away at the family home yesterday following an extended illness which held him on the brink of death for several months. Burial will follow at Soledad Community Cemetery.
"R.S.," as he was called by everyone who didn't still call him " Mr. Tipton," a carry-over from his 21 years as Soledad school administrator, was born at Burlington, Kansas. When he married at Veals Station, Texas, in 1893, he was already engaged in the teaching profession. The family came here in 1923 and he retired from the Soledad school in 1944.
After his retirement, he filled his leisure hours with a part-time bookkeeping job for several years. He was a charter member of Soledad Rotary Club and club president during the 1936-37 term. He had served for many years as secretary of the Chamber of Commerce as well as being on the board of the Soledad Community Methodist Church. He relinquished the last of his active outside interests this year with his resignation from the Monterey County Board of Education, one of his favorite positions because of its educational ties.
Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Ida Tipton of the family home, 625 North Street; one daughter, Mrs. John McEwan of Saratoga; three grandchildren, Lamar Tipton, New York; Mrs. Barbara Sundby, San Jose; Mrs. Helen Sills, Escondido; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Myra Duncan of Redding; and Mrs. Addie Bond of Little Rock, Ark. Two sons, Everett and Aubrey Tipton, preceded him in death.
