William Nelson Tipton, 64 a pumper for the Petroleum Exploration Co. (PatX) was killed instantly in an accident at one of the pump stations of the company at Pitts, six miles from Irvine, Sunday morning between 5:00 and 6:00 O'clock,. Since he was alone at the time of the accident, details were not available, but workmen who arrived a few minutes later and found his mangled body stated they believe his clothing has caught in a driving belt throwing him with great force against the wall or flooring. He is survived by his wife; one son, Sam Tipton, Pitts; seven daughters, Mrs. Worth Barnes, of Woodford County, Mrs. Harve Puckett, Willow Tree; Mrs. Bert Pasley, Mrs. Cecil Neal, Mrs. Bertha Jones and Miss Lucinda Tipton, all of Pitts; two sisters, Mrs Kitty Blanton, Winchester, and Mrs. Cal Abney, Willow Tree; six brothers, John Simp., Millard, Claud and Elihu Tipton, Pitts; former Jailer Andrew Tipton, Willow Tree, and Dillard Tipton, Beattyville.

He was born April 1, 1869 Estill County, Kentucky. He had two children by his first cousin, Nancy Ann Tipton, but they were never married, Nancy Ann (b. abt. 1871) was the daughter of William H. Tipton and Malinda Crowe. children of Jame H. Tipton and Nancy And Tipton; Clarence Tipton(b. 4/1892) and Samuel (b. 4/11/1894).
Then suddenly, on February 8, 1896 in Estill County, James married Nannie B. Tipton (daughter of Samuel W. Tipton and Bebecca Jane McIntosh) James H. and Nannie b. Tipton's children: Cora (b. May 1894) and Harve (b. dec. 1896)Five days later, Nancy Ann Tipton married Joseph Barnett on February 13, 1896 in Estill County(Quite a coincidence) Nancy Ann Tipton and Joseph Barnett's chlidren were: Hattie (b.1896) and maybe Armster.
According to family legend, James and Nancy Ann couldn't stay apart. On Jul 11, 1896, James was shot and killed. (He is buried in the Tipton Family Cemetery at Pitts) It was thought that some of Nancy Ann's Brother's may have done it. But when you think about it, it could have also been Nancy Ann's husband, or James's wife, or someone totally unknown. the list of supects gets longer and longer.
To make matters worse, after James was killed, Nancy Ann committed suicide.
As for the children of James and Nancy Ann; Clarence was raised by Joseph and Mary Barnes, Clarence later married Sarah Brinegar (daughter of William H. "Buddy" Bringar & Mary Fletcher),
Samuel was raised by William R. Gillespie. He went by the name Gillespie until he was 16, Samuel later married Easter Elizabeth Brewer.After James H. Tipton's death, Nannie B. married Enoch Puckett and the children, Cora and Harve went by the name Puckett. Harve married Gracie Tipton 9 daughter of William Nelson Tipton & Nancy Jones).
Nancy Ann Joseph Barnett's child, Hattie Barnett also lived with the William R. Gillespie family. It has been said that Hattie married at age 14 and died in childbirth at the age 15. Her husband's name is unknown.
